The filing period for local candidates planning to run for open seats in the Nov. 6 election opens July 16 and closes Aug. 10, unless an incumbent fails to file for re-election. In that case, the deadline is automatically extended to Aug. 15, according to political reporter Lisa Vorderbrueggen, who has compiled a long list of open seats in local agencies.

Here’s an excerpt of her list, which includes school board openings in Contra Costa and Alameda counties:

In the Mt. Diablo district, incumbents Gary Eberhart and Sherry Whitmarsh have not yet publicly announced whether they intend to seek re-election. The teachers’ union has endorsed challengers Brian Lawrence and Attila Gabor. District residents Ernie DeTrinidad and Debra Mason have also told me they intend to run.

What are you looking for in a candidate?

AUG. 22 UPDATE: I have received a phone call from Mt. Diablo teachers’ union President Guy Moore informing me that MDEA has endorsed retired College Park HS Principal Barbara Oaks, now that Attila Gabor has pulled out of the race due to health concerns.

    Eberhart is out?

  2. Theresa Harrington Says:

Apparently so. I’ve left messages with him to confirm, but haven’t heard back yet. Also, still no word from Board President Sherry Whitmarsh about whether she’ll run again.

Here’s our short news brief about his decision to step down:

  3. Hell Freezing Over Says:

5th MDUSD ed board candidate as of 08/03/12 is Barbara Oaks

HFO: Thanks for this update. As of 8/3 only one candidate has filed papers and qualified for the ballot: Debra Mason.

As far as I know, Oaks was a very well-respected principal at College Park HS in Pleasant Hill before she retired. The only time I ever recall her being involved in any sort of controversy was when she was advocating that STAR scores be printed on student transcripts as an incentive for high school students to take the tests more seriously. That proposal was never adopted by the board.

Her entry into the race is reminiscent of Dick Allen’s decision to run for the school board after serving as a district administrator for many years.

  5. Theresa Harrington Says:

I have heard from the district that Board President Sherry Whitmarsh is out of town due to a death in the family. It’s unclear whether she will be able to file her papers by today’s deadline.

WCCUSD incumbent Tony Thurmond has announced he won’t seek re-election:

  7. anon Says:

How do you file papers if you are out of town?

  8. Anon Says:

    Anon #57,

With friends in high places you can get papers filed for anything, whereever in the world you may be. The rest of us are not afforded these niceties.

  9. Doctor J Says:

Maybe someone better see if Sherry really signed them ? If they are notarized, I think you can get a copy of the notary page which should show Sherry’s signature and proof, such as Driver’s License, that she used for identification. Or, I guess its not beyond possibilities, that they were forged. Theresa, perhaps you had been get copies first thing Monday morning.

  10. Theresa Harrington Says:

Attila Gabor has dropped out of the race due to health concerns.

  11. Doctor J Says:

Sorry to hear that, but I guess that opens it up for Mike. Come on Mike . . . you have a lot to offer and would really ramp up the stakes !
