Diablo High. It’s worth noting that others at MDHS laid the foundation for this project. Science teacher Sandy Johnson-Shaw created the student garden project at the school several years ago. It was one of her many accomplishments that led to her being a finalist for Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year. The school’s highly regarded International Hospitality and Tourism Academy and its Serendipity Restaurant were created and guided for many years by Judy Moon, also a County Teacher of the Year finalist who is now retired. Her successor, Kevin Fuller, has carried on the program’s standards, success, and enthusiasm.

Increasingly, teachers and business people are working in partnerships such as this one at MDHS, enabling students to learn about and experience real world careers well before they graduate high school. Can students in a large public school district receive an education that prepares them for college and career choices? Yes, they can.
