Thanks for the ‘check lists’ Dr. J. I’ve avoided any talk about the horror that happened in Connecticut, but have put a lot of thought into the entire tragedy, and wondered about our schools.

Since Principals change -a lot- and teachers change -a lot- and site councils change -a lot- and city safety officers assisting with training may not be the same for each school, or available in a pinch…I wonder:

It is December. Since May of last year–especially since Sept., how many new principals have reviewed, rehearsed, memorized, the information at their new school; held safety up-date meetings with all of the many new teachers, and site council members?

Does each teacher have a copy of The Book, or is it “in the office if you want to borrow it sometime.”

If a real emergency arises, when just seconds count, who all knows where “The Book” is, and how about the (many) Subs du-jour? Surely they aren’t left in charge of the children and just told “the Safety Book is on the shelf over there.” And if alarms sound, who has time to peruse “the book” for “what do we do now?”

Each of us may feel certain about security at one or two schools, but all of them? One can’t help but wonder….

I am very satisfied with the safety plans that I am seeing at schools. That is all that I care about. Your hyperbole doesn’t have a positive impact on student safety, that much I am certain of.
