Here's a look at how some AP U.S. History students at Carondelet HS are using laptops and blogs in classroom debates to get them excited about learning history: http://www.contracostatimes.com/twitter/ci_22444700/tech-savvy-students-support-debate-arguments-through-digital …

Dear Theresa,

I enjoyed your update of Jan. 11th regarding the school testing overhaul. I must say as a parent and grandparent, I have never been fond of Star Tests as they are good for the students who can take tests without anxieties or can read fast, write fast etc., but for the student who is slower or can't function well taking tests, let alone a Standardized one, they just aren't an accurate measure of what they do or don't know. I have also found that some teachers are test-taking teachers and fail to key into the students' needs and focus on how much they should know to get high test scores for the teacher's benefit. Also, what good do the Star Tests do for the student? I don't see it giving them extra help that they may need and if they don't know it before the exam, shouldn't they? If they need help in a specific area, shouldn't they be getting this during the school year. After all, the results are sent out long after the school year ended. Isn't this the job and responsibility of the teachers and schools?

I do agree there has to be a balance -- how that is achieved is going to be difficult. Maybe several types of exams for different students and obviously grade appropriate.

I do believe that in H.S. that there be an exit exam, so we know that students can read, write and do basic math and believe this is so.

Thanks Theresa
