How do you think the district should spend its Common Core funding?

  1. Doctor J Says:

The district has concealed the estimates of costs so it is impossible to even have a discussion. LCFF was intended to give the public more knowledge so it could make its feelings known. As long as the district holds its cards close to the vest, the public cannot give meaningful input.

  2. Doctor J Says:

Lynne Dennler gets another tardy. Poor example to students. Why doesn’t she just resign ?

  3. Doctor J Says:

Trustee Brian Lawrence patronized once again by Julie B-M who refused to follow recent board direction to disclose in the agenda names of internal candidates proposed for new jobs –saying she “needs more board direction”. In a recent board meeting she agreed to an interim disclosure of internal candidates. Why doesn’t she propose her own agenda item ? Why does Dr. Nellie allow such public insults to the Board by an Ass. Supt. ?

  4. tmharrington Says:

Trustee Cheryl Hansen mentioned that Dr. Bernard had proposed some sort of “pilot” plan to reveal the names of candidates, but no one explained what the pilot plan was or why Braun-Martin wasn’t following through with it. If there is a pilot plan, she should already know about it and be implementing it. If she needs more direction, trustees should give it to her. But it is Meyer who approves the agenda. So, if the names are missing, she should add them.

  5. Doctor J Says:

Julie B-M is so disingenuous that her lack of credibility has become perverted. It was just on Jan 15 during the appointment of Lisa Keck to Sequoia MS VP that Brian continued his commentary from previous months that at least an internal appointment should be disclosed to the public — and Dr. Nellie nodded her agreement emphatically. Yet Julie B-M’s arrogance of defiance of both Trustee Lawrence and Dr. Nellie, especially her on camera smirk to Brian Lawrence, is deserving of at least a public apology if not disciplinary action. See it for yourself on Jan 15 video, at 1:35:40 to 1:36:10. It sure looks like to me that Dr. Nellie agreed to at least disclose internal candidates in the public agenda at least 72 hours in advance. I also recall an exchange in either December or November where that was also agreed.

  6. Doctor J Says:

Last night Dr. Nellie said she was openly critical of John McMorris after one dad described in detail McMorris’ caustic words berating a troubled teen, telling the teen he was no good, wasn’t wanted at Northgate, in front of the parent and son. Dr. Nellie called McMorris’ behavior “a problem”. McMorris’ mal-behavior is digging his own hole deeper and deeper. Hear the dad at 26:55.

  7. Flippin' Tired Says:

The superintendent’s name is Dr. Meyer. You insult and belittle the person and her position every time you refer to her by her first name. Have some respect.

  8. Guest Says:

McMorris already told his staff that the he had the board’s total support

  9. Guest Says:

I agree. Dr. J has posted an explanation for referring to her in this matter, claiming she was called “Dr. Nellie” in San Diego by staff. I think that is irrelevant; in this forum she should be referred to by her last name, just as Teresa Harrington refers to her. Imagine if Teresa called her Dr. Nellie? If Dr. J knows the superintendent, he can call her by her first name in person, but should not do so here.

  10. tmharrington Says:

If Dr. Meyer has agreed to disclose the names on the agendas, then she should do it. She’s the boss, not Braun-Martin.

  11. tmharrington Says:

I see WCCUSD has a “Quick Link” to mandated reporting info on its home page:

Annie Nolen has told me that MDUSD also recently placed mandated reporting info on its website at her continued urging. I search on “mandated reporting” and couldn’t find it. I looked on the Student Services website and couldn’t find it. Finally, I looked under “personnel forms” and found it listed as “Child Abuse Report Form.” This information shouldn’t be this hard to find:

  12. Doctor J Says:

No FT, her name is Nellie Meyer. Please don’t confuse names with titles. One of her titles is Superintendent which is a temporary title based on her employment. Another title she earned with her EdD. Is Doctor. Another title she has is wife and mother — well earned in her case. Do you belittle her accomplishments by abbreviating her titles ? I don’t think so and I don’t believe I disrespect her by only using her given name. If you ask Dr. Nellie which title is most important to her, I am sure she would say wife and mother. In your case . . . I will leave it up to you to decide what is your most important title. Mine certainly is not doctor. Is yours “flipping” (a vulgarity substitute) or “tired” ????

  13. tmharrington Says:

Here’s a new blog post reminder about the Sunday FAFSA and Cal Grant application deadline:

  14. Flippin' Tired Says:

Really, you’re going to defend your disrespect? That’s pathetic.

  15. Concerned13 Says:

Just more poor decision making on behalf of MDUSD. Having an easy to find link… with “special instructions” (like they have on the WCCUSD site… should have been a top priority. Immediately.

If you notice on the WCCUSD site – it also has a “checklist” of sorts to do in case of an emergency. What’s at the top of the page (the only thing above this is encouragement to report ANY suspected abuse) >> CALL the Police Department or CPS. This is not “optional” – it’s the law.

  16. Doctor J Says:

Really ? Total support for what ? Taking $40,000 “under the table” ? Or verbally berating and humiliating a troubled teen in front of his father ? Was McMorris having serial communications with the Board ? Is McMorris so arrogant he can admit to crimes and think he can get away with it ?

  17. g. de la verdad Says:

The board was distressed that Moore brought the hidden payments to the public eye — but none of them seemed surprised about the payments.
Expect some fancy footwork in Bryan’s next expenditure reports. The PFC should have run the payments through their District contributions/offsets to allow the District to properly file taxes and Worker’s Comp reports. How they will cover up for last year’s IRS 990 is a question to ponder.

  18. tmharrington Says:

Here’s my story about the preponderance of lease-leasebacks in MDUSD: Controversial lease-leaseback contracts have become popular in Mt. Diablo district

  19. tmharrington Says:

Northgate HS placed fourth in the recent countywide Mock Trial competitions:

No other MDUSD school competed. However, CVCHS was there, along with schools from many neighboring districts.

  20. Doctor J Says:

CDE agenda is posted. Did Lorie O’brien get caught lying ? agenda W-22 says the public hearing notice was “published” — published is a legal term of art requiring published for ten days prior to the hearing. Did not happen. Her prior response to Theresa was just 72 hours on line. ALSO, CDE found out that Lorie did not tell MDEA who didn’t respond until the day after the Board vote –how disingenuous. MDEA opposed and the Board did not know of it. CDE is soliciting email comments.

  21. Doctor J Says:

CDE doesn’t recommend approval of waivers for 2014/15 school year!!! Only for 2013/14 school year. Not disclosed to MDUSD Board by Lorie O’Brien: Oak Grove Site council opposed the waiver: Where are site Council minutes ? Lorie O’Brien told Theresa that Public Hearing was only noticed by Brown Act requirements for “Special Meeting” and not published for ten days in Newspaper — yet she told CDE that Public Hearing Notices were published in newspaper ostensibly for ten days. NOT true. MDUSD Board meeting was Dec 16 — yet MDEA didn’t oppose until Dec 17 ! MDHS Site council didn’t meet until Dec 23 — really ???? — where are the Site council Minutes ? Oak Grove site council opposed on dec 17 — again the day after. I hope the public will notify CDE about the “funny business” going on.

  22. Doctor J Says:

Dr. Nellie announces MDEA/MDUSD “deal” but keeps details secret. Rumors ongoing since before the board meeting are that MDEA caved in and took a 3% raise retro to July 1 with a one time 2% bonus. Essentially both sides sold “class size reduction” down the river in favor of putting the extra money in administrators pockets under the “me too” under the table deal. Class size reduction will NOT happen in MDUSD for either 13/14 or 14/15 school years and perhaps beyond. No postings as of yet on MDEA website. Will MDEA members ratify “tentative agreement” or “reject it” and strike ? .Can’t wait until Bryan Richards calculates the deal for Board approval AND how he factors in the CDE requiring a return to small class sizes at Mount for the 2014/15 school year QEIA requirements.

  23. Guest Says:

Details on MDEA website…..thanks to Dr. Meyer, Barbara Oaks, Cheryl Hansen, and Lynn Dennler, four authentic educators who helped make this happen. If this had been two years ago with the old regime and board majority we would have been nowhere. Thank you.

  24. Doctor J Says:

so guest! where are we ?

  25. Doctor J Says:

every dollar taken away from the children. Guy, are you really proud of stealing candy from the children ? so what is the impact on the “me too” administrators ? do they get an equivalent to the increased MDV to the teachers ?

  26. Tk Says:

    Doctor J,
Seriously? Are you going to sit here and tell teachers in this district that they are taking from their own students? Those who the teachers serve every single day, in their extra time, over summers, and go the extra mile for over and over again?
Teachers deserve a raise and medical benefits. You have a Strange outlook on this topic.

  27. Doctor J Says:

@TK, Guy Moore had his teachers carry union made signs promoting Class size reductions during the negotiations — then he sells out the children to line the pockets of administrators. Just like Crooksey said: “I’m on your side — I get whatever raise you get.” Just wait n see how much this takes from the children’s classroom — a three year deal. Richards must tell us how it is going to be paid for — ask what budget line items are being reduced to pay for the three year deals.

  28. tmharrington Says:

Agenda for special joint meeting tonight with Clayton City Council has been posted:

  29. tmharrington Says:

Here’s the district’s announcement, which gives no details:

    Here’s MDEA’s announcement:

  30. tmharrington Says:

This board action summary incorrectly describes item 2 – it should say the Community Day School and Necessary Small HS administrator positions were removed from the list:

  31. tmharrington Says:

Here’s info on the upcoming votes from MDEA:

“We will vote to ratify our new contract March 18 through March 20.

If you would like more information before you vote, please attend one of the following meetings:

    MDEA Contract Ratification Meetings

    Thursday, March 6 College Park
Monday, March 10 Ygnacio Valley High School
Wednesday, March 12 Concord High School
Tuesday, March 18 Riverview Middle School

All meetings will start at 4:00 and should be over by 5:00

I’ve requested the Library at each school, but the Use Permits haven’t been approved yet, so we might get moved to a different room. We’ll update the information if something changes.

Thank you for all of the happy thoughts today and all of your support at Rallies, Board Meetings and everything else you did to build support for this change.
    MDEA Leadership”

  32. tmharrington Says:

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend last night’s CAC meeting. However, it looks like some interesting items were discussed, including anticipated program changes and transportation:

Did any readers attend? If so, what was the CAC response to the proposed changes? Thanks!

  33. Doctor J Says:

Theresa, we need to see the total costs with breakdowns including all hidden raises to administrators and other piggy back unions. surely Bryan Richards has that or can your financial genius do it or check Richards calculations ?

  34. tmharrington Says:

Santa Clara COE is offering a free bond workshop featuring MDUSD financial adviser Jon Isom and David Olson of KNN, who consults for WCCUSD:

  35. Doctor J Says:

Many, if not all, links to school websites formerly available from the “our schools” link have been taken down by the district.

  36. tmharrington Says:

Please note that I am uploading video from last night’s joint meeting with the Clayton City Council to Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to capture the entire meeting since I arrived late and had storage issues on my phone and ipad. Discussion regarding “the elephant in the room” – Clayton Valley Charter HS – was very interesting.

  37. Doctor J Says:

Vice-Mayor Shoe really gave MDUSD the polite “number 10” about its unwritten policy of exclusion of parent/community volunteers. Too bad Theresa ran out of memory — the responses to that would have been fantastic. The MDUSD issue is so apparent at Northgate — parents give us your required donations and we will line the principal’s pocket with $40,000 under the table. Then for McMorris to declare he has “full Board support” — how does he know that ? Brown Act serial meeting violations ? board, we need — no, we demand — an explanation.

  38. Doctor J Says:

Contrast the “open communication” of CVCHS and the closed secrecy of myopic MDUSD as highlighted by the Clayton City Council last night. Monthly updates from Dr. Meyer ?? Never seen one in six months. Several emails a week from CVCHS — regular occurrence. Board President Barbara Oaks was so UNPREPARED last night — she didn’t have correct statistics of Mt Diablo elementary or of Diablo View Middle — just guessed at them miserably. It was embarrassing. CVCHS has really put to shame the old and the new boards of MDUSD. Is DVMS the next teacher trigger charter ?

  39. Doctor J Says:

The dirty secret the Board is keeping from the public: ADMINISTRATOR’S secret raises will cost the district more money this fiscal year than teacher’s raises. Administrators through DMA (Diablo Manager’s association) have a secret “me too” deal to keep the separation between aministrator’s pay and teacher’s pay in “parity”. Since the 2% pay increase for teachers doesn’t kick in until Feb 2015, the Board sweetened the deal for the Big Four, all whose contracts expire on June 30, 2014. ALL administrators working as of Feb 24, 2014 will get a 2% bonus on top of the 3% retro to 7/1/13. This will make Administrators as a group, costing the district more in raises, than all of the teacher raises during this fiscal year. If you don’t believe me, ask the Board to make all the financial impacts public NOW ! Board, stop the secrecy. Stop the favoritism to the administrators. I can see it coming now: In Jan/Feb 2015 when teachers get $12,500 for medical and a 2% raise the administrators are going to be clamoring for their “me too” raise. as Yogi Berra said, it’s déjà vu all over again.

  40. tmharrington Says:

All that will likely make it more difficult to restore CST hours or improve CSEA benefits.

  41. tmharrington Says:

No one from the district responded to the Clayton council members’ comments about the differences between CVCHS and district schools. They also didn’t respond to allegations that the district is stonewalling CVCHS attempts to expand.

  42. Doctor J Says:

The MDUSD culture of deception and dishonesty continues at Dent and Holbrook. Also note that when asked about the “five year plan” Dr. Nellie punted to the ever slippery silver-tounged Tim Cody who ignored the question and BS’d about the last two years. Truth: there is NO FIVE YEAR PLAN going forward. With no one challenging the ballot language vagueness, Dent and Meas C feel invincible.

  43. tmharrington Says:

My favorite part was when the Clayton Council members said they only found out the middle school was getting a new science building when they read about it in the paper.
“That would have been nice to know, when people ask us about what’s going on at the middle school,” said Councilwoman Julie Pierce.
But no MDUSD staff offered to keep the council informed about new construction going forward.

  44. Doctor J Says:

Three Blind Mice . . .or Three Stooges ? Linda Mayo, Cheryl Hansen, Barbara Oaks. It was pathetic. Let’s take a vote. Theresa, I am glad you enjoyed the show !!

  45. g. de la verdad Says:

And sadly, while CSTs and MDEA cry out for “help,” none will forego even a tiny portion of their own monitary demands in order to get the extra feet on the ground they say they must have. Marie Antoinette comes to mind.

  46. g. de la verdad Says:

500 sq miles, 6 cities = time to elect school board by city/zone/population percentage! We’ve waited too long!

  47. Sherry Whitmarsh Says:

    I agree

  48. Doctor J Says:

I also agree. sherry, during your tenure on the board was this issue ever discussed ? I thought at one time the ACLU was targeting school districts for this very purpose.

  49. Sherry Whitmarsh Says:

There was a very brief discussion with Dr Lawrence. I’ve hear more from parent recently. This would also allow more minorities to have a chance of being elected. I’m not sure how the unions would feel as they would have less of a voice in the elections instead of basically being the deciding factor.

  50. Sherry Whitmarsh Says:

I’ve always has lots of respect for Ms Mayo as I think she really studied the issues. Even when we were on opposing camps she was logical and thoughtful.
