Oakland’s own Angela Wellman (trombonist/founder of the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music) will be peforming Friday night, Jan. 18, at a super-cool event called “Cultural Encounters,” which is a fancy way of saying that jazz artists were asked to compose original music inspired by works of art held by the De Young Museum in SF. Wellman chose “Imunu People-Gulf of Papua.” The line up also includes Mitch Marcus, Howard Wiley, Ben Goldberg, Marcus Shelby, Erik Jekabson, Babatunde Lea and Kasey Knudsen.
