WHEN: Oct. 29 4-7 PM
WHERE: YMCA  (5908  Foothill Blvd)
WHO: Silence The Violence, 106 KMEL Ella Baker Center’s Silence The Violence campaign will host its first community forum targeting youth in a specific Oakland neighborhood.  On Oct 29, 2008, from 4-7 PM, Silence The Violence is sponsoring the “Youth Speaks Forum” at the YMCA (corner of Foothill Ave and Seminary Blvd).  In recent months, this neighborhood has been hit with an alarming spike in violence. Just a few weeks ago, six people were shot in a single incident. Silence The Violence is hosting the youth forum and performance showcase to give the young folks that live in the area an opportunity to discuss the issue of street violence and learn about resources that our available to them. In addition to serving free food, young people will be introduced to the youth programs in the area and will be encouraged to get involved.  The event will include music and a panel of speakers to discuss violence, how it effects our communities, and possible solutions. The Ella Baker Center plans to continue this on-the-ground outreach with a series of community forums around the city as a way to prevent violence by connecting young people to resources they may not know about.
