Word of the Year– Obama-nation, you betcha, tree sitters, Dumpster Muffin?

By kbender

The American Dialect Society is considering its nominations for 2008 word of the year. Past winners have included “red and blue state,” “subprime” and “Plutoed.”

This year, the individual nominations from the public so far are:”change,” “bailout,” “maverick,”  “to vet; vetting,” “Obama nation”/”Obomination”/”Obamination” (treated as one item), “game-changer,” “hope,” and “Obamamania,” “Obamanos” and “you betcha,” “Joe Six-Pack” and “meh.”

What if there was a word of the year in Berkeley? What would it be? “tree sit,” “Pink Ladies,” “unwelcome intruders,” “Dumpster Muffin,” “entombed,” “sustainable,” “public commons,” “inappropriate street behavior,”  ”carbon footprint, ” “green corridor,”  or “solar financing.” Help me out here.

Anyway, the real “word of the year” should be new or newly popular in 2008, widely or prominently used in 2008 and indicative or reflective of the national discourse, contest organizers said.

Grant Barrett, chair of the American Dialect Society’s New Words Committee, knows a lot about words. He is co-host of the nationwide public radio show “
A Way with Words” and the editor of the “Double-Tongued Dictionary.”

He came up with a few of his own nominees this year, including “bail out,” “fish pedicure,” “caribou Barbie,” “driving while texting,” and “hockey mom.”

His full list with definitions are posted here:  http://americandialect.org/Barrett-2008-WOTY-Nominations.pdf

The word of the year will be chosen next week in San Francisco and it’s not too late to send nominations to woty@americandialect.org.

The Berkeley word of the year will maybe be chosen by me when I feel like it. It’s also not too late to send nominations to kbender@bayareanewsgroup.com. Happy New Year!

Happy NYE

By awoodall

There’s plenty of NYE events but I will neither write about them nor cover any of them. I’m on a train to Portland (eight hours behind schedule = 24 hours on Amtrak) for some R&R especially after I got sideswiped Dec. 24.  I walked out with bruised ribs, a big bonk on my head and misc scratches and bruises. The guy came out of nowhere and hit the hell out of the car at the point of the driver seat. So I’m out until Jan. 5. Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and a fantastic New Year. Here’s one more event in addition to the Washington Inn one. http://www.pingg.com/rsvp/ntypf4wi7ipyp48xm

Even in politically correct Berkeley, this seasonal greeting can’t offend

By kbender

I traded in the greeting ”Merry Christmas” for “Happy Holidays” a long time ago, but even that message of kindness may not sit well with some folks, especially in politically correct Berkeley.

So, I was most pleased to get this electronic greeting from Fred Dodsworth (father of former City Council candidate Asa Dodsworth) and a former newspaperman himself.

“Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice , with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and /or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.”

“And a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2009, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great, (not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country or is the only “America” in the Western Hemisphere), and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith, political party, choice of computer platform, tool brand, or sexual preference of the wishee.”

By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms. This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal, it is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for herself / himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher.

“This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of these wishes or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the sender.”

Well said Fred, who later told me he actually borrowed it from his friend Dr. Charles “Chick” Wolf.

Pimpin’ or gang-banging… Oakland can’t catch a break

By cburt

Some folks are up in arms over word that HBO is filming a series about pimps, based in Oakland. They are worried that it’s portraying Oakland in a bad light, a la The Wire, HBO’s primo series about political graft, drugs, homicides in Baltimore and the often-flawed cops that investigate and solve the crimes.

Well, get ready, cuz pimps and the prostitution trade aren’t the only topics filmmakers are interested in.

A documentary film crew funded by the Discovery Channel has been prowling around West Oakland the past month for a three-hour series on gangs, interviewing folks and filming funerals.

They are focusing on the impacts from the deadly feud between the Acorn and Ghost town gangs that culminated in a big-time raid in June and the arrest of more than 50 gang members, including the alleged ringleader of Acorn, Marc Anthony Candler.

The film makers plan to come back to Oakland for more footage next year. So much for Oakland’s image.

Burnin’ down the highway

By cburt

If you see some weird (beauty’s in the eye of the beholder) gigantic sculptures traveling down Interstate 880 this morning, it’s because NIMBY is on the move to its new East Oakland warehouse on Amelia Street.

You can check out my earlier post or story to get the smoky details, but in a nutshell, an untended candle sparked a fire that ended up with inspectors crawling around NIMBY’s longtime arts space on 28th Street in West Oakland.

(Michael) Snook, owner and founder, found a new, bigger space that complied with all fire codes, etc… in East Oakland. He had to raise $36,000 for the move in costs, but that’s done and starting today, all the great Burning Man sculpture, torches, and other stuff that’s been  packed up in shipping containers is finally heading to their new home.

The new place is going to have a far-out sculpture garden with pieces like Michael Christian’s IT.

Santa coming to West Oakland

By cburt

If youngsters can’t wait for Christmas, I have it on good authority that Santa is coming to a holiday party at Beth Eden Baptist Church at 10th and Adeline Streets in West Oakland from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20.

The free holiday party and toy giveaway is sponsored by the church and Omega Psi Phi fraternity’s Sigma Iota chapter, which has been in Oakland since 1946.

Oakland is such a prude

By awoodall

I came across this in Oakland’s municipal code while researching a story:
9.28.030 Prohibition against the display of female breasts. Every female is guilty of a misdemeanor who, while participating in any live act, demonstration, or exhibition in any public place, place open to the public, or place open to public view, or while serving food or drink or both to any customer:
A. Exposes any portion of either breast below a straight line so drawn that both nipples and all portions of both breasts which have a different pigmentation than that of the main portion of the breasts are below such straight line; or
B. Employs any device or covering which is intended to simulate such portions of the breast below such line; or, C. Wears any type of clothing so that any portion of such part of the breast may be observed.

9.28.040 Prohibition against display of private parts. Every person is guilty of a misdemeanor who:
A. Exposes his or her private parts or buttocks, or employs any device or covering which is intended to simulate the private parts…, while participating in any live act, demonstration, or exhibition in any public place, place open to the public, or place open to the public view, or while serving food or drink or both to any customer; or, B. Permits, procures, or assists any person to so expose himself or herself, or to employ any such device.
This chapter does not apply to:
A. A theater, concert hall, or similar establishment which is primarily devoted to theatrical performances.
