Bomb scare at Oakport building

By awoodall

A bomb scare caused the evacuation of several floors of the 7677 Oakport St. building – including the law offices of John Burris (who is representing the family of Oscar Grant III) and The Oakland Tribune — about 11 a.m. today. Several dozen employees who work in the building stood in groups around the parking lot while police arrived on the scene to assess the situation. The Alameda County Sheriff Office bomb squad was called to investigate.  No word yet on what, if anything, was found. Bomb threats have closed down county, state, city and now business buildings in the past two years — about one every couple months. The last scare was near 7th and Washington streets, when an abandoned bag was sighted. None of the threats turned out to be credible. But no one is taking any chances.

New places to sip wine

By awoodall

Two new spots are coming on line soon. Penelope on Clay St. between 11th and 12th Street, next door to It’s a Grind. I haven’t seen the plans yet but I think it’s supposed to be a wine bar just like Encuentro at 200 Second St.

This event is being done with the blessing and support of the Oakland Police Officers Association.More information will be forthcoming.

Another Parkway update

By awoodall

I guess I am a nobody or at least not a regular Parkway customer because I didn’t know until Monday that the Parkway Speakeasy was beset with legal problems as I was writing a follow up story for tomorrow’s Night Owl column in the paper. I say that because the East Bay Express reported that anyone who was a steady freddy at the theater would know all about the operators’ landlord woes that evidently led to a lawsuit and more court action. Apparently, there are a lot of us because even on the Save the Parkway Web site, organizers are still in the dark.
I guess the Parkway isn’t all Catherine and Kyle Fischer had to worry about. If there’s a don’t talk clause involved in the legal action fine. Otherwise they need to come clean and talk openly about the financial troubles in both locations. That way, the community that treasures both cinemas could show (could have shown) their love in dollars and sense.

Sunday supper at B

By awoodall

Does roast leg of lamb or white lasagna sound good? Come and get it family style at B Restaurant and Bar: $20 a person for dinner, $20 East Bay wine by the bottle, $15 pitchers of Bay Area beer. Top it all off with ice cream. Music including roller-skating rink classics selected by the Saltiest Cracker. Hmmmm.

Nibbles and drinks in Oakland

By awoodall

Here is a recap of a few dining and drinking possibilities from the Oakland Convention and Visitors Bureau

Eat Well: Oakland Restaurants

Eating well is a way of life in Oakland, where the restaurant scene is booming with new places and new flavors. Joining Flora Uptown, Pican features tastes of the South and Ozumo brings the East Bay its renowned Japanese cuisine. At Lake Merritt, the NY Times has praised the food and ambiance at Camino. Nearby, former chef/owners of Zax and Zax Tavern have opened a new hotspot called Sidebar. House-made salumi and pate are on the menu at Adesso on Piedmont Ave. Try the tapas at Barlata on Telegraph. Or if you’re drinking your dinner tonight…

 BeersBeers & Brewing: Pints Aplenty

Beer lovers, rejoice! Oakland once had more than 40 breweries in town and today the spirit of artisan production lives on with a heady selection of brews on tap and in bottles all around town. Located in Old Oakland, The Trappist specializes in Belgian beers but offers some 15 beers on tap and more than 140 specialty beers by the bottle. Just around the corner, the Pacific Coast Brewing Co offers 24 beers on tap – of which four to 10 are brands of theirs such as Gray Whale Ale and Orca Porter. On Piedmont Avenue, Cato’s Ale House offers live music and more than a dozen brews. Look for Linden Street Brewery’s Common Lager on beer lists around town.

Parkway update

By awoodall

As you might know, rescue efforts for the Parkway Speakeasy have veered away from saving the cinema as is and launched into discussions about how to create an institution that savors the fun, funky flavor the operators created  while also having a viable business model and landmark status for the vintage theater. I’m writing a full story for Friday’s Night Owl in the Trib but here is a link to the cyber headquarters for organizers Read the rest of this entry »

More Fox news from downtown

By awoodall

The Den at the Fox, the Fox Theater’s lovely lounge, is set to open March 27 acc. to the marquee. I take that to mean that the Den will be open FT. I thought from the grand opening info provided by our tour guide that the lounge was supposed to eventually operate outside of show hours, including Sundays. That would be a kick. In the meantime, the lights on the marquee were all twinkly tonight. Finally the month of March break in Fox programming is coming to an end.
