Parkway update

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 at 8:57 am in Night Owl, Oakland nightlife, Parkway Speakeasy.

As you might know, rescue efforts for the Parkway Speakeasy have veered away from saving the cinema as is and launched into discussions about how to create an institution that savors the fun, funky flavor the operators created  while also having a viable business model and landmark status for the vintage theater. I’m writing a full story for Friday’s Night Owl in the Trib but here is a link to the cyber headquarters for organizers who are holding a meeting to discuss plans March 29 at the Rooz cafe. In the meantime, Will “the Thrill” Viharo is hosting the 12th anniversary Thrillville show in all it’s “B” glory — beasts, breasts, blood, brains, beatniks, bikers, blaxploitation, burlesque and beer —  at the Cerrito Speakeasy April 9 beginning at 7:30 p.m.  So, out of the ashes will spring Ed Wood’s “immortal masterpiece” Plan 9 from Outer Space and the Twilight Vixen Review (not to mention, among other treats, Plan 9.1 from Outer Space).
