I swung by the swell Ellington posh condos near Jack London Square tonight for a swank opening party. This is the place that plastered a photo of San Francisco’s skyline on its bottom floor to entice people to move to Oakland. I forgot to check if they finally took it down before Jerry Brown showed up in his role as Mr. Oakland (he’s been doing that a lot lately: The Fox, OSA etc.) as did Don Perata who wants to become Mayor Perata of Oakland. The party was gracious with those endearing touches such as ribbon twirlers in clown makeup and glittery foxy red short-shorts and lipstick standing outside the open condos on the ninth floor. I went to see the artwork curated by Kerri Johnson of Blankspace Gallery.
There were some lovely models all with to-die-for views of Oakland, including the pool on the sixth floor. Small little bedrooms though. But with enough glasses of wine, beer and cocktails practically pouring themselves into guests’ glasses who notices?
The condos don’t go on the market until May, which I learned after committing the faux pas of asking “Have any been rented yet?” That happens when they let in someone who is not one of their “connoisseurs.”
“They are not for rent. They are condominiums…” replied a smiling woman as though I had asked for ketchup on salmon or something but she has to bear it. Anyway, it’s a good addition to the spot down there. Here’s what the condo advertisers say:
In a neighborhood known for its emerging food, arts and cultural scene, Ellington residents will enjoy the best that urban living has to offer just steps out their door. As with other newcomers like Joie de Vivre Hotels, Miette and Blue Bottle Coffee, The Ellington joins established neighborhood favorites like Yoshi’s and Everette & Jones BBQ to transform Jack London Square into Oakland’s next great neighborhood. With unmatched waterfront views, easy access to public transportation and markets, and a sleek, modern design aesthetic, The Ellington offers progress, elegance and livability in a setting renowned for its urban renewal done on a human scale. Sparing no luxurious detail, The Ellington represents the cutting edge at the water’s edge.
The Ellington’s 134 one bedroom condos, two bedroom condos and penthouse suites will be opened to the public for the first time the night of the debut party. These luxury homes will be available for purchase for the first time on May 1.
