Oakland is officially too cool

By awoodall

The image is of a trading stamp with the image of James Brown on it issued by black merchants in Oakland. http://www.rantrave.com/Rave/James-Brown–Black-and-Brown-stamps.aspx

Special Election Summer Mixer at Z Café.

By awoodall

Tuesday (July 21) compliments of the Ella Baker Center. Good place to wait out the results of the special elections: will Oakland fund its way out of the red by becoming the first city to tax pot? The Ella Baker Center also will be talking strategy and introducing a new campaign director. The evening kicks off at 6:00 PM. Appetizers will be provided, and happy hour drink specials will be available. Z Café is located at 2735 Broadway. Cheers.

Booze crackdown coming

By awoodall

The other day a Trader Joe’s clerk scrutinized my credentials for buying a bottle of wine. “Have I checked your ID before?” he said. That was his polite way of saying, “Let’s see it.” I always relish the look on people’s face when they see 1969. But it’s been happening more often than usual and among young clerks who have special youth detectors. “Should I take it personally that I have been carded twice since I turned 40?” I asked my boyfriend. I wanted to take it personally. But then I remembered the agenda item on next Tuesday’s City Council meeting.  OPD stands to get $100,000 from the Alcoholic Beverage Control dept. for a year-long crackdown on illegal booze sales and nuisance sellers. It looks like OPD wants to go after sales to minors and liquor stores but they might be including any establishment with a liquor license, such as the Seven Seas cocktail lounge on Mac. in the Laurel Dist.  I really don’t know how much this money would change things. My sense is that it supports efforts already in the works.

FIVE bar and restaurant now open in Berkeley

By awoodall

July 9 was the grand opening of the Shattuck Hotel’s restaurant/bar, FIVE in downtown Berkeley. It looks grand.
I once read the hotel had a smoking bar but never got there. Regrets! I also wanted to try the Afghan restaurant that occupied the downstairs, too. I assume they are both gone now.

Sip local in August

By awoodall

So I am bummed after missing Tori Amos’ sinful act – including a rendition of Britney Spears – at the Paramount. Actually, I don’t care but I heard it was camp-a-licious. My consolation prize:
From Oakland to Emeryville, more than a dozen urban wineries will be opening their bottles to all during the Urban Wine Experience without  all the snooty pressure or price of Napa Valley. No driving hours to slurp, sniff and sneak the sacred grape juice. On Saturday, August 8, from 2pm-5pm, the 4th Annual ‘Urban Wine Experience’ will take place. Fourteen wineries will be camped out at the Meadow at Jack London Square, pouring their wares with an opportunity to try upwards of 50 different delectable wines. Participating wineries include: Adams Point, Andrew Lane, Aubin Cellars, Dashe Cellars, Eno Wines, Irish Monkey, JC Cellars, Periscope Cellars, Prospect 772, Rosenblum Cellars, Tayerle Wines, Two Mile, Urban Legend and Urbano Cellars. Feast your eyes

Camera 84

By awoodall

The incredible tale of the Camera 84 project (“we’re leaving disposable cameras around the world. people are picking them up, taking a few photos and passing them on, eventually returning home – so we can tell their stories”) in which one disposable “camera then hopped across the pond with Michael J, and the roll was finished off in Oakland, California…”

Real Life in Oakland, Part 1

By awoodall

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVhz4pstyGE
I don’t think the video reps everyone’s experience “living in Oakland.” But I think it’s good for people to share their life and thoughts with those who don’t share the reality, so I’m putting it up here. The video references the OPD-Mixon shootings, which provoked long-simmering complaints and opinions that were never resolved.  So be prepared.

Twenty-five years ago today in Oakland

By awoodall

…Philippe Wynne, a former lead singer of The Spinners, died of a heart attack while on stage in Oakland, California. Read it and weep on Just Another Blog (from L.A.). It’s also my dear cousin Kristel’s 30th BD. If JABLA is right, her birthday is the same day four Palestinian guerrillas stormed the Egyptian Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, killing two guards and taking some 20 hostages. (The guerrillas surrendered 45 hours later.)
