Oakland: greener than thou

By awoodall

Dellums’ office just announced Oakland is the fourth greenest city in the nation when this blog post from Civil Eats popped up: “In Oakland, California last week, the political momentum seemed to clearly and perhaps irrevocably shift to formation of a sustainable food system for the nation. Hailing from three western states and Washington DC, 120 leading activists (from farms, ranches, philanthropy, businesses and NGOs), 15 USDA officials, and two important northern California mayors focused on the issues of food security, foodsheds, and public-private partnerships to accelerate change.” Read on for more

SF Weekly jumps on Oakland bandwagon

By awoodall

The headline today on the SF Weekly blog: “Planned Openings Clinch Oakland’s Status as Emerging Restaurant Hot Spot.” Nothing that wasn’t already mentioned here but nice to know others are paying attention and letting people on the other side of the bridge know too — the people who don’t get word until San Francisco media pay attention.

Farley’s East Opening tonight

By awoodall

Farley’s East is throwing a bash (coffee, beer, music and a good time) from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. to celebrate the café’s official opening. Farley’s began in SF but the second generation – Chris and Amy — wanted to put down roots in Oakland, where they live. The café is located at 33 Grand, just a few storefronts above Broadway. Tel: 510-835-7898. Ask about mysterious story behind the Chaplinesque emblem.

Art@theoakbook

By awoodall

That is the name of the new gallery that the Oakbook will open in Jack London Square, according to the magazine’s Alex Gronke. Another thing Gromke said: the venture has nothing to do with the Jack London Association. So does that mean the gallery is more of a gamble? Maybe. But then again, what isn’t a gamble these days?

Oakbook to open art space in JLS

By awoodall

Oakbook art critic (“correspondent”) Theo Konrad Auer is set to head a multi-use art gallery in Jack London Square.  They’re still searching for a name for the space that will join SWARM , Hive Studios and Oakland Metro in the Square (Pro Arts moved near City Hall). The gallery, in a storefront across from Barnes and Noble bookstore, is a collaboration between Oakbook and the Jack London District Assc. so the venture is not as precarious as it sounds at first. But Auer is still nervous. Sweet talk for Pican

By awoodall

Did you all see the write up by Michael Bauer in the Chron for Pican, our southern belle on Broadway? (Strangely enough I can’t seem to find the article online just yet.) Chip Johnson is still declaring the sky is about to fall on everyone this side of the Bay Bridge.  But the Chron’s coverage of Oakland – at least in the Food and Wine section — has been low on my snark barometer. Here’s more about our city’s dining scene from Bauer.

Breakdancing lives

By awoodall

I’ve been working on a story (forever!) about hip-hop dance history and came across “The Oakland Breakerz” one day near Pier 39. They had the crowd going.
