BART releases video from July 3 officer involved shooting

By awoodall

See BART video that provides a partial view of the July 3, 2011 officer involved shooting on the platform of the Civic Center/UN Plaza BART Station.  Today BART said it released the platform video, which contains what happened moments before the shooting, which killed 45-year-old Charles Hill.  But I still can’t find it online.

Mondary car burglary suspects arrested

By awoodall

Oakland police have arrested three people believed to be responsible for a spate of auto burglaries discovered early Monday morning. Officers Melissa Geraci, Jamin Creed, Russell Mederios and Delmar Tompkins were called out to Cleveland Avenue and Radnor Avenue on a report of a vandalism that had just occurred. There they found several vehicles with their windows smashed, police said. Officers contacted the owners of some of the victims’ vehicles and determined that several auto burglaries had occurred.
A short while later, Officers Geraci and Mederios spotted a vehicle blocking a driveway and parked the wrong way in the 600 block of Hillgirt.  Before stopping the vehicle, officers saw someone jump into the nearby bushes, police said. Officers conducted a vehicle stop and made contact with a female sitting in the driver’s seat, police said. Police said they found a man and a male juvenile male hiding in the nearby bushes. All three were detained on suspicion of auto burglary, according to police. When officers conducted a search of the suspect vehicle, they discovered items from some of the nearby auto burglaries, police said.
All three suspects were taken to the Criminal Investigation Division where they were interviewed by investigators.
Two of the suspects admitted to their involvement in the burglaries, police said. The other suspect refused to speak to investigators. The arrestees were identified as Wilber Montano, 18-years-old, Deysi Lovo, 22-years-old and a 17-year-old male, all from Oakland, according to police.
Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department Assault Section at (510) 238-3426.

Taser me out to the ballgame…

By awoodall

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=f30_1249529724

Footage of an  A’s game at the Coliseum where a man was tasered for his very unruly behavior. Then a foul ball lands nearby. And people say the Raiders fans are bad. Evidently, OPD is not messing around…Two recent officer-involved shooting and a tase. Or maybe people are just getting crazier.

Real Life in Oakland, Part 1

By awoodall

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVhz4pstyGE
I don’t think the video reps everyone’s experience “living in Oakland.” But I think it’s good for people to share their life and thoughts with those who don’t share the reality, so I’m putting it up here. The video references the OPD-Mixon shootings, which provoked long-simmering complaints and opinions that were never resolved.  So be prepared.

Bomb scare at Oakport building

By awoodall

A bomb scare caused the evacuation of several floors of the 7677 Oakport St. building – including the law offices of John Burris (who is representing the family of Oscar Grant III) and The Oakland Tribune — about 11 a.m. today. Several dozen employees who work in the building stood in groups around the parking lot while police arrived on the scene to assess the situation. The Alameda County Sheriff Office bomb squad was called to investigate.  No word yet on what, if anything, was found. Bomb threats have closed down county, state, city and now business buildings in the past two years — about one every couple months. The last scare was near 7th and Washington streets, when an abandoned bag was sighted. None of the threats turned out to be credible. But no one is taking any chances.

Oakland homicide ranking

By awoodall

A new ranking of cities by homicide rates that, unlike FBI and other reports, “adjusts each city’s homicide figures by differences across the cities in poverty, median income, male unemployment, race composition, and female-headed families.” The researchers say that the model produces a more meaningful comparison of city homicide levels, especially for providing insight into the effectiveness of criminal justice policies and programs.

Huge Ecstasy bust in West Oakland

By Kathleen Kirkwood

In one of the largest Ecstasy seizures ever in California, 45 kilograms of the drug with a minimum street value of almost $2 million were found at a West Oakland house Friday during a series of law enforcement raids from Willits to the East Bay, authorities said Tuesday.

Besides the powder form of the drug found in Oakland, a huge manufacturing lab was dismantled in Willits in Mendocino County, and at least nine people, including the ringleader suspect from El Cerrito, his brother and two Emeryville residents, were arrested.
