The temperature outside may be falling but inside it’ll be rising at the Pirate Cat radio station fundraiser Thursday with the Hubba Hubba Review. The ladies will be swinging their tassles again Dec. 19 (the Christmas show!) and Dec. 26 (Red Hots Burlesque).

War on Wheels as San Francisco and Richmond meet at Fort Mason
Richmond Wrecking Belles vs. San Francisco ShEvil Dead on Saturday, August 9, at Herbst Pavilion, Fort Mason Center, San Francisco. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; the battle starts at 8:00 p.m. Event is 21+ with ID for entry and to purchase alcohol. Tickets are $15 in advance, $17 at the door. The Blue Candle stopped burning

Someone blew out the flame on Dorsey’s Locker “Blue Candle” happy hour and spoken word special the club used to host twice monthly. The party’s over, at least for now.
But the “80s Party” is still on at Sweet’s Ballroom, 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. August 22. Admission is $30 but the winner of the $500 best dressed contest could chip in. 21+ only. Too $hort is listed on flyers as a “special invited guest.”
It’s Havanisimo every Saturday at La Taza de Cafe beginning with dinner served beginning 5 p.m and son Cubano featuring Cubanacan at 7 p.m. Dance lessons are at 9:30 p.m. A DJ takes over at 10 p.m.
The next day groove over to the Air Lounge for Jamboree Sundays, a chilled out drumming and drinks jam. The music is supposed to be salsa, merengue, soca, reggae and world beat. And later — 7 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. – to Soul Sundays at Arsimona. (Thank you! Dancing on Sunday night!)

Fuel for 48-hour film frenzy

There was no room in today’s Trib for my advance story about the Oakland-based film crew — Step 6 Productions – competing in the 48-Hour Film Project. Look for the article tomorrow, unless space restrictions or breaking news bump it again. That said, Ericka Obenar, one of the crew’s filmmakers and an Old Oakland resident, said other teams are playing dirty by flagging Craig’s List posts canvassing for crew, cast and other logistics. So Obener is putting out the word that FOOD is particularly needed. That probably goes for the other 57 teams involved in the competition.

O-Town CALL FOR MEDIA ARTWORK

THE GREAT WALL OF OAKLAND: The City of Oakland is now accepting works for possible screening on the “Great Wall of Oakland.” This 100 by 100-foot outdoor wall overlooks the busy intersection of Grand Avenue and Broadway in the bustling center of Oakland’s Uptown District, surrounded by restaurants, condominiums and galleries… SCREENINGS
Now in its second year of programming, the Great Wall of Oakland is the canvas for exciting experimental media art by contemporary regional and international media artists as well as classic film and video selections. Screenings are held after dark on the first Friday of each month, the night of the monthly Oakland ArtMurmur gallery walk.

CURATED SHOWS
We have established themes for each month’s show and encourage you to submit work that relates either literally or extremely loosely to these themes. You may submit artwork at any time for any month OR work that does not pertain to any of these themes. We look forward to seeing your creativity!

Friday, July 4, 2008: INDEPENDENCE. Deadline: Friday, June 27, 5:00 p.m.

August 1, 2008: WATER. Deadline: Friday, July 11, 5:00 p.m.

September 5, 2008: LABOR. Deadline: Friday, July 25, 5:00 p.m.

October 3, 2008: FOOD AND DRINK. Deadline: Friday, August 29, 5:00 p.m.

November 7, 2008: DEMOCRACY. Deadline: Friday, September 26, 5:00 p.m.

December 5, 2008: HOLIDAYS. Deadline: Friday, October 31, 5:00 p.m.

TECHNICAL GUIDELINES
- You must be the author or co-author of this artwork and have the right to grant permission to screen the work for non-profit purposes.

- There is no minimum length. Works up to 15 minutes long will be considered.

- Pieces must work without audio. (At the present time we do not have the capability of presenting audio tracks, ambient audio or live accompaniment.)

- Artwork must be appropriate for display in a public place.

- Submissions should be high resolution QuickTime files that can be played on DVD and are compatible with Mac AND PC laptops.

- Both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios are accepted.

SUBMISSION
(1) Send an email including artist’s name, email address, phone number, title of artwork submitted and running time to: thegreatwallofoakland@gmail.com

(2) Email a preview link of your work to thegreatwallofoakland@gmail.com

(3) Mail a DVD containing your work (and clearly marked with the above information) to:

LOCATION
The Great Wall of Oakland overlooks Grand Avenue just west of Broadway, above a parking lot behind Luka’s Taproom & Lounge. The 100 by 100 foot images are projected onto the eight-story back wall of Metrovation’s building at 2201 Broadway, across Grand Avenue from the roof of Signature Properties’ Broadway Grand condominiums.

Eli’s Mile High closing

A note from Samuel D. Marshall: I want to start off by thanking everyone that I’ve met these last 2 1/2 years owning the business side of Eli’s Mile High Club. I succeeded my dream of becoming an official owner of a club, I by no means opened it to get rich, I opened it to save live music, and make it a fun place to come to and have a little fun. These past 2 years have been very difficult times for me trying to work a fulltime job, and then run and host at the club Eli’s Mile High, and then try to run my own band, and then try to find that happiness. Well the landlord decided to raise the rent by an anormous sum to where I could not take it anymore, so, I decided to say enough is enough so I decided to move on. So once again I want to thank everyone who came out and supported the club, and like the saying goes, I’ll see ya all down the road, take care everyone, and be true to yourself everything will be alright. On a lighter note, here’s the story about the “People Party“ at the Oasis club in Oakland in today’s Trib. It was a hoot. Someone e-mailed me asking what the clubs address is. The answer: 135 12th St.
Have fun if you go. The next one is April 26 — every fourth Saturday.
