Parkway: more (non massage parlor) news

By awoodall

Having narrowly escaped the potentially lucrative but unappealing fate of being turned into a massage parlor, the Parkway theater is still luring cinema-minded entrepreneurs with its picture, pub and pizza siren song. A meeting is taking place Wednesday between the building’s owners and just the kind of guy who would remain faithful to the old days – at least more than a massage parlor would.

Speakeasy Theaters, the sequel

By awoodall

I put the follow-up taxi story to bed tonight and finally got a chance to read the East Bay Express feature about the dramatic sinking of The Cerrito and Parkway speakeasies. Good to have the story of disintegration in one place although I don’t think that’s the whole story. In the meantime, Will “the Thrill” Vilharo is taking his Thrillville showcase of all glorious B-movies, once a Speakeasy staple, on the road to SF (the 4 STAR cinema!) and San Jose. The material is having its West Coast distribution debut. The Cerrito has reopened successfully under the management of Bay Area familiars Rialto Cinemas and the Indiana-based Motion Picture Heritage Corp. is in the running for the Parkway.  The Fischers, who sparked something special to the East Bay, are stuck with many millions in debt. Doesn’t take a fortune-teller to forsee a long road ahead.

The Cerrito Theater needs you – now!

By awoodall

This is from supporters:
On Monday night, May 4, the El Cerrito City Council will be asked to decide: What is the future of the Cerrito Theater?

Everyone who loves the theater should come to this meeting to show their support for its continued operation.

The meeting is at City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave. at 7:30 p.m. The item is expected to come up around 8:30 p.m. Members of the public can speak during public comments at the start of the meeting, or when the item comes up. It is not necessary to speak. Supporters of the theater will be asked to stand at one point to show their support. It is not necessary to live in El Cerrito to attend or to speak. This will be the council’s first public meeting on the theater since it was revealed that the current operators have fallen behind on rent. The discussion will be entirely open to the public. Save the Parkway potluck Sunday

By awoodall

Save the Parkway neighborhood potluck BBQ: 1 p.m. Sunday at FM Smith Park.

Bring food and an appetite for details about what’s being going on with efforts to salvage the Parkway Speakeasy, how people can get involved and closing the raffle to help support the laid off employees. Meanwhile, The Cerrito Speakeasy has been having problems. I have to say there are similarities between the two, including the communication breakdown between the two sides.

Another Parkway update

By awoodall

I guess I am a nobody or at least not a regular Parkway customer because I didn’t know until Monday that the Parkway Speakeasy was beset with legal problems as I was writing a follow up story for tomorrow’s Night Owl column in the paper. I say that because the East Bay Express reported that anyone who was a steady freddy at the theater would know all about the operators’ landlord woes that evidently led to a lawsuit and more court action. Apparently, there are a lot of us because even on the Save the Parkway Web site, organizers are still in the dark.
I guess the Parkway isn’t all Catherine and Kyle Fischer had to worry about. If there’s a don’t talk clause involved in the legal action fine. Otherwise they need to come clean and talk openly about the financial troubles in both locations. That way, the community that treasures both cinemas could show (could have shown) their love in dollars and sense.

Parkway update

By awoodall

As you might know, rescue efforts for the Parkway Speakeasy have veered away from saving the cinema as is and launched into discussions about how to create an institution that savors the fun, funky flavor the operators created  while also having a viable business model and landmark status for the vintage theater. I’m writing a full story for Friday’s Night Owl in the Trib but here is a link to the cyber headquarters for organizers Read the rest of this entry »

Almost as good as an Obama blow-up doll

By awoodall

Thursday is all about Obama. This almost makes up for all the despair of the past seven years. The Cerrito and Parkway speakeasies are broadcasting on all their screens Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention Thursday. FREE, Doors open 5:30, first come first served, 18 and over at both theaters.
