Contra Costa GOP chair Del Beccaro has competition

It looks as though Contra Costa County GOP Chairman Tom Del Beccaro may have some competition in his bid for vice chairman of the state party.

A blogger on the conservative Flash Report filed this item today which says that state party treasurer Jalene Forbis and former Assemblyman Tom Bordonaro intend to run.

Del Beccaro has been campaigning for this job for months and even has a nice web site.

For folks unfamiliar with this process, campaigns for state party leadership posts are remarkly similar to public elections. Candidates seek endorsements and spend big bucks on signs and buttons. Republicans will select their leaders in February at the party’s winter convention in Sacramento.

As chairman of the statewide association of county Republican Party committees, Del Beccaro has watched his profile rise throughout the state. He has given several hundred speeches to volunteer party organizations.

But he’s had troubles at home in Contra Costa of late, where several board members resigned amid problems related to the management of its executive director. (See my column on this fracas.) Several Central Committee folks have even talked privately about running against Del Beccaro for the local chairman’s post when the party holds its organization meeting on Dec. 9.

Wait and watch to see if Del Beccaro can hold on.

I am surprised to see you are still saying that several board members resigned. You continue to say this, even after I corrected you during our interview prior to your original article in the Contra Costa Times.

As you know, JoAnn Erickson resigned over a disagreement, but then re-joined the board a few days later. Phyllis Stout is not a board member. I notice you made up a title for her in your Contra Costa Times article, but she is not a board member. She has no voting rights, nor can she make any motions to the Executive Committee. She was an observer and advisor. Nothing more.

Your buddy, Kris Hunt, is the only member of the Executive Committee that resigned, and did not return. I told you that during our interview, but you continue to print the untrue statement that “SEVERAL” members have resigned. Are you just making this stuff up?

Any member of the Central Committee that chooses to run against Tom Del Beccaro for Chairman is welcome to do do. That is why we call this an election. However, I have spoken to many of the people that will actually be VOTING at the December 9 organizational meeting, and I know that they will be voting for Tom Del Beccaro. He has done great work while serving as our Chairman, and I and many others will be voting for him. I have been talking to many of the volunteers and they agree with me and are backing Tom. I think you had better check your sources.

Trust me. Tom Del Beccaro can hang on.
