Peace events around the Bay

Tuesday is the fourth anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq, and peace demonstrations are planned from coast to coast. Here’s a sampling of what’s happening around the Bay Area in coming days:

Saturday, March 17
WALNUT CREEK: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., march from Walnut Creek BART station to Civic Park for a noon rally; various speakers and performers; organized by the Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center.
SAN RAFAEL: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Court Square Plaza on Fourth Street near A Street; “The Big Peace March,” featuring speakers including Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Petaluma, and Marin County Board of Supervisors President Susan Adams as well as a march through downtown; organized by Next Generation and the Marin Peace Action Team.
PALO ALTO: Noon to 3 p.m., in City Hall Plaza, 250 Hamilton Ave.; featuring speeches from local activist leaders and Sameer Dossani of 50 Years is Enough, music by the Raging Grannies, a march through downtown, and more; organized by the Peninsula Peace and Justice Center.

Sunday, March 18
SAN FRANCISCO: Noon, in Justin Herman Plaza, Market Street and the Embarcadero; a mass demonstration and march to Civic Center Plaza; organized by the San Francisco Bay Area A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition.

Monday, March 19
SAN RAMON: 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. outside Chevron‘s world headquarters, 6001 Bollinger Canyon Road; a “4 Years of War for Oil — Enough! Basta!” protest, rally and civil disobedience.
SAN FRANCISCO: Noon, outside the Philip Burton Federal Building at 450 Golden Gate Ave.; a protest rally featuring speakers including San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, Rabbi Michael Lerner of Berkeley and 2006 Oakland City Council candidate Aimee Allison; organized by the Stop Funding The War Coalition.
SAN FRANCISCO: Noon, Market Street between Embarcadero and Civic Center with assembly points at Spear and Market, Montgomery & Market, Westfield Center and UN Plaza/7th & Market; a die-in in which some participants at the Montgomery Street site — outside the district office of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. — will risk arrest for civil disobedience.
BERKELEY: 6 p.m., at 1538 Shattuck Ave.; a candlelight vigil, organized by Cynthia Papermaster via MoveOn.org.
HAYWARD: 6 p.m., outside the old City Hall on Mission Boulevard between C and D streets; a candelight vigil organized by Stephania Widger via MoveOn.org.
FREMONT: 6:30 p.m., at the flagpole on the of corner of Paseo Padre Parkway and Walnut Avenue; an interfaith candlelight vigil organized by Pax Christi via MoveOn.org.
SAN FRANCISCO: 6:45 p.m., at Justin Herman Plaza, Market Street and the Embarcadero; a candlelight vigil in which participants will arrange themselves to spell a giant “OUT!”; organized by Nancy Stark via MoveOn.org.

Tuesday, March 20
OAKLAND: Noon, outside Oakland’s Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building, 1301 Clay St.; a “living graveyard” street theater in which people will lie on the sidewalks beneath white sheets to symbolize those killed in the war; organized by the Ecumenical Peace Institute/CALC.

Saturday, March 24
OAKLAND: 10 a.m. to noon, at the Grand Lake Theater, 3200 Grand Ave.; Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, hosts a town hall meeting on the war. Afterward, Oakland City Councilwoman Jean Quan will lead a march from there to City Hall for a 1 p.m. rally addressing how the cost of the war and resulting domestic budget cuts are linked to violence in Oakland.
