Chavez, 61, died unexpectedly on Saturday of an apparent heart attack during a public hearing about the future of the recently surplused Concord Naval Weapons Station site.

The gregarious hairstylist ran the Charisma Salon with his wife, Vikki, a popular destination for many of Contra Costa County’s best known politicians for nearly three decades. He is also survived by his son, Austin, 15, and daughter, Dallas, 13.

A reception will be held immediately after the service at St. Agnes, which is located at 3966 Chestnut Avenue in Concord.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to a trust for Chavez’ children: The Chavez Memorial Trust Fund, care of Mechanics Bank, 1170 Concord Ave., No. 160, Concord, CA 94520.
