I don’t think this was actually a carjacking. I think it was an honest mistake. Perata was driving around in a total thug-mobile. This thug probably had his own car stolen, saw Perata driving the same kind of car, and decided to take it back.

The carjacking in the senator’s own district does not in itself dent his overwhelming popularity. Senator Perata was not threatened with an assault rifle, a pet peeve of his. I suppose if he were threatened with a tire iron it would lead to calls for legislation controlling the possession of heavy blunt objects.
