GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is dropping out of the race after spending millions of dollars of his own money trying to wrest the nomination from chief rival Ariz. Sen. John McCain and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Mitt Romney is a man of great talent. He seems very likeable. But his flip flopping on social issues I think was too much to overcome. Just a little too slick. With McCain the moderate getting the nomination the question is how would Romney had done had he not changed his positions on key social issues and stayed a moderate/liberal Republican? We will never know. If McCains bid for the presidency fails I think Romney may run again in four years as a conservative again.

That sounds absolutely right. It could be a winning strategy, too. As someone pointed out to me, Republicans seem to like electing as president people who have failed on the first try.
