I might add that the orginal mission of NATO was two-fold: re-integration of Germany into a peaceful, democratic Western Europe and resistance to Soviet encroachment. In effect, NATO placed German armed forces under multilateral command and committed US forces to the defense of Western Europe against Soviet Russian aggression. Thus,whatever its failings, NATO made revival of German militarism virtually impossible and placed the forerunner of the EU under America’s nuclear umbrella.
