Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, is the only member of Congress attending the 17th Annual International AIDS Conference, now in progress in Mexico City, according to my Oakland Tribune colleague Josh Richman at the Political Blotter.

Richman writes:

Lee coauthored the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)the recent reauthorization which puts $48 billion toward helping millions of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS around the world. She told me this afternoon she wishes progress in fighting the disease here in the United States would be so successful.

Is she a medical expert? Why doesn’t she attend a conference on curbing violent crime in urban areas?

George Miller is going to Paris this summer on a junket, and Lee is going to Mexico City. Tough duty if you can get it. Sam Rayburn, the legendary Speaker from Texas – known for his absolute integrity – took a single trip during his 30 years in Congress. When he died he had about $10,000 in a savings account. He spent his time fighting for the people, rather than cashing in his job, at taxpayers expense. These modern Congressman – like Lee and Miller – they like living it up at the expense of taxpayers, which they do with junkets and thier bloated staffs.

According to the CDC, only 27 percent of HIV/AIDS cases occur among heterosexuals. Broken down by race, just 34 percent of cases occur among Whites. That might explain why Congress isn’t going all-out on this problem.
