Dem convention: Media fireworks

Sunday, August 24th, 2008 at 1:54 pm in 2008 presidential election, Political conventions.

Fireworks lit up Denver on the first night of the Democratic National Convention but it had nothing to do with political heat.

Sponsors threw a big party last night at the city’s amusement and waterpark for the 15,000 members of the media in town for the four-day convention. Lots of food, alcohol and free amusement park rides. They didn’t let us into the wave pool. That would have been fun.

No, I didn’t ride in the Scrambler. I don’t like spin, either the physical or the political kind.

We tried to get into the VIP reception. After all, MediaNews, which owns our company, was a major sponsor of the party. (Translation: They contributed cash.) But we were turned away. Oh well. It didn’t look that exciting anyway.

Here’s a short video clip of the fireworks. It was dark and my little Flip video has limitations but it will give you an idea. I’m with my colleague Mary Ann Ostrom from the San Jose Mercury News; she’s interviewing another journalist. That’s how little news we found in Denver on Saturday night: We resorted to interviewing each other.
