The deadline to register to vote in the high-stakes Nov. 4 general election is Monday.

But there’s no excuse to miss it.

Alameda and Contra County election officials, in conjunction with the League of Women Voters, are holding evening registration drives in Oakland and throughout Contra Costa.

Election officials predict record turn-out in the incredibly tight presidential election between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain.

But residents must register on time in order to have their votes count.

First-time voters and anyone who has moved, changed their name or wants to change their political party must register.

Mail voter registration forms must be postmarked no later than Monday or voters may deliver them to their local election offices.

Forms are available at county election offices, city halls, libraries, post offices and many other government offices. Registration forms are also available for download at the California Secretary of State’s website, www.sos.ca.gov.

In Alameda County, election officials will hold a “Midnight Madness” voter registration drive outside its downtown Oakland office at 1225 Fallon Street from 5 p.m. to midnight.

Also in Oakland, the League of Women Voters will host a registration drive at Safeway, 5130 Broadway Ave., in Oakland.

In Contra Costa County, the League of Women Voters will staff seven voter registration tables at the following Safeway stores:
n Antioch, 3365 Deer Valley Road, 4 p.m.-10 p.m.
n Brentwood, 3110 Balfour Ave., 4 p.m-10 p.m.
n Concord, 2250 Monument Boulevard, 4 p.m.-10 p.m.
n Lafayette, 3540 Mt. Diablo Boulevard, 4 p.m.-10 p.m.
n Martinez, 6688 Alhambra Avenue, 4 p.m.-midnight
n San Ramon, 2505 San Ramon Valley Boulevard, 4 p.m.-midnight
n Walnut Creek, 710 Bancroft Boulevard, 4 p.m.-midnight
