The political media are abuzz with news that President-elect Barack Obama has chosen former Clinton White House Chief of Staff and former California Congressman Leon Panetta to head the Central Intelligence Agency.
His son, James Panetta of Oakland, is an Alameda County Deputy District Attorney who serves as supervising attorney for the county’s Narcotics Task Force; he’s also a Navy Reserve intelligence officer who was awarded the Bronze Star for his 2007-08 deployment to Afghanistan.
And Leon Panetta’s daughter-in-law, Carrie McIntyre Panetta, was named to the Alameda County Superior Court bench by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in October 2007; also a former county prosecutor, she presides over a courtroom at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse on Oakland’s Washington Street.

I believe Leon Panetta to be one of the most admirable political figures we have had in years. We would be lucky to have him serve in the Obama Administration.

I’m with Sue on this one. I worked with Leon Panetta when he was a Congressman and I was the National Security Agency Representative to the Defense Language Institute/Foreign Language Center overseeing training for military and federal civilians in 43 languages and dialects.
Leon would attend the annual General Officer Steering Committee meetings held in Monterey and I can assure you that Leon fully understood the purpose of DLI/FLC and the intelligence work its graduates would be conducting.
He suggested that I attend the Monterey Law School run by his brother, as he knew that I’d be going into politics when I retired from the Navy.
I used to kid Leon that we both married women above our status, as we both married Sylvia’s
Leon Panetta is one of the most honorable politicians I have ever met. He is a fiscal conservative and a supporter of the U.S. military.

He’s a perfect choice for an agency that’s done such a lousy job in the last decades.
