Unsuccessful GOP Assembly District 15 candidate Judy Biviano Lloyd is among the 15 candidates seeking appointment to a vacant seat on the San Ramon Valley Unified School Board seat.

The opening was created, ironically, when Democrat Joan Buchanan successfully won the Assembly seat in November. Lloyd lost in a four-way fight in the June 2008 primary to San Ramon Mayor Abram Wilson.

The school board will choose Buchanan’s replacement, who will serve out the two-year balance of the term. The successful applicant will enjoy a significant advantage as an incumbent, however, if he or she decides to run for the seat in 2010.

  1. Arne Simonsen Says:

The SRUCD Board of Trustees certainly couldn’t go wrong by selecting Judy Lloyd to serve out the remainder of Joan Buchanan’s term.

Judy is a very successful businesswoman, full of energy and an advocate for education.

Her experience at the U.S. Department of Labor will help bridge the link between K-12 education and the needs of potential employers.

  2. ted Ford Says:

she has my endorsement too. Judy is simply a very nice person.

  3. cyberdog Says:

Ah yes the in this era of shrinking expectations for Republicans we can now bear witness to candidates who lower their sights to local office just to stay politically viable. (See Guy Houston last spring)
Now enter our transplanted old local yokel from the Bush Administration Judy Lloyd. Judy is a nice enough person and very much the political animal. My question to her is she really interested in rolling up her sleeves and working for the children of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. Or does she just want to hang her hat politically somewhere until there is an opportunity to run for higher office? We don’t know do we?

It would be fun to watch Lloyd operate. I think the Unions will go nuts if she got the appointment since this was the former Joan Buchanan seat. She is very close to the anti-labor union contractors who I believe raised money for her during her Assembly race. The dynamics on the school board would be wild if she tried to pay back her old anti-union supporters. She also supported school choice when she was running for the State Assembly. enough said.

The question is do we really want a Republican partisan/operative from the Bush administration to be appointed to the San Ramon Valley Unified School District? Read her blog on Fox and Hounds. She thinks Sarah Palin is a star. I mean just knowing that fact alone taints her appointment in my eyes. She is also an appointee of Governor Schwarzenegger. As a member of the public these are not two leaders (Schwarzenegger and Bush) who any thinking person at this point would reelect to office. Why would we want to give Lloyd who has not spoken out or shown any independence from her old bosses a job supervising our kids so she can keep her political hopes alive? To my mind it is one thing to louse up Sacramento or Washington DC. But our children are too precious to have a Republican operative experimenting with their future.

So parents call the San Ramon Valley Unified School District and tell them no to former George W. Bush appointees on the Board of Trustees!

It always bothers me when I hear people like Cyberdog refer to Merit Shop Contractor associations as “anti-union”.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

Merit Shop Contractors believe is Open Competition – competition that is open to union and nonunion contractors.

To be honest, it is the unions that want to restrict competition through the use of Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) which generally require a nonunion contractor to “temporarily” unionize their workforce if they are the successful low bidder.

I also find it disturbing that Cyberdog finds it necessary to demonize anyone who served in a Republican administration at the State or Federal level.

It is also a bit hypocritical for Cyberdog to say “do we really want a Republican partisan/operative…appointed to the San Ramon Valley Unified School District?” But in the same breath Cyber dog refers to it as “Joan Buchanan’s seat” (e.g., meaning that seat should go to a Democrat partisan/operative since Buchanan is a partisan Democrat).

Here is a question for cyber-dog. Do you even know her? She has received great marks for her ability to reach across the aisle and did a lot of great work in the Asian community while she was the labor rep. Our community is part of a growing population in the school district and she understands that. She gained a great reputation for getting things done effectively and serving the public well, no matter what role she had or who appointed her to it.

Public servants give their time and expertise to make things better – she has proven herself and wants to give back again. What are you doing other than trashing the reputation of a good public servant?

  6. Kyle Vallone Says:

I think cyberdog is a little to hard on Judy. She is a good person with a lot of experience in government. The SRVUSD would be dumb not to consider her as she is very qualified.

  8. Elizabeth Kearney Says:

I recently read the commentary on Judy Lloyd, and I was both shocked and annoyed (enough to write this commentary) by the negative views expressed by one individual. My interactions with Ms Lloyd have strengthened my view of her capabilies, her integrity, and her dedication to improving the the status of the individuals, community, and organizations with which she interacts. It always annoys me to read or hear sweeping commentaries that are based on few, if any, facts but are stated in such a way as to damn the person being attacked. I, for one, feel that any task that Judy Lloyd takes on would profit greatly from her skills, expertise, and concern for the well being of others. Instead of dealing in generalities and ignoring her specific accomplishments (which are many and not “party specific), Cyverdog would do well to deal in facts and consider accomplishments and goals.
