California Republicans on stimulus bill passage

By Josh Richman
Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at 12:03 am in Republican Party, U.S. House, U.S. Senate.

I posted earlier on what your Bay Area House members were saying about the economic stimulus bill, but they all bat for the same team.

California Republican Party vice chairman Tom Del Beccaro of Lafayette had this and more to say (on Thursday, though I assume he still felt the same or moreso after the votes were taken Friday) at his Political Vanguard site:

Most of this bill is a Christmas tree of handouts to unions and other Left leaning causes. Remember, this is the first time the Dems have had control of Congress and the Presidency in 15 years – they went for it all because they know in 21 months, they may not have the House. That is why it is packed with items that will advance socialized medicine, global warming rescues and the rest. They also know that it is easier to create a government program than it is to end it. Hence their haste.

Jon Fleischman, a state GOP regional vice-chair, posted to his FlashReport.org a statement from Rep. Ed Royce, R-Fullerton, which said in part:

Instead of pork barrel spending, Congress should look toward spurring investment and job growth through the private sector. Any type of stimulus package should be focused on encouraging private capital into the system rather than redistributing taxpayer money through the government.

Hear from California Republican Party chairman Ron Nehring, after the jump…

Nehring had this to say:

“We’re extremely proud of our California Republican delegation in the Congress for opposing the Democrats’ massive, wasteful spending bill.

“Californians are today looking for relief from an economic slide that has hurt our state more than any other. The Reid-Pelosi legislation passed today with zero Republican votes will not help stimulate the economy – it will only help stimulate the size of government and the mountain of debt future generations will be saddled with.

“Members of California’s delegation in the House have persuasively made the case against the Democrats-only stimulus legislation as nothing more than traditional liberal spending programs – many of which have absolutely nothing to do with economic growth – repackaged to take advantage of Americans’ concerns about the economy.

“Republicans are not only united in opposition to this massive waste of taxpayer dollars, but have put forward an alternative that would get our economy moving by reducing the barriers to working, saving and investing. Unfortunately, Democrats have put aside any notion of bipartisanship and instead have jammed through a massive spending package that most Americans believe will not translate into any benefit to them. And they’re right.

“Congratulations to all our Republican members of Congress from California for standing up for taxpayers and against the massive government waste this package represents.”

    Lisa,
Thank you for bringing us comments on the stimulus from the three stooges of the California Republican Party. These gentlemen are so out of touch with regular working an voting Californians I become ill just reading their comments. I think they are all more interested in furthering their own media careers than doing the hard work of growing the Republican Party in California. If they are to be measured by their results as chair and vice-chairs any normal organization would have booted these stooges a long time ago. But then again if they dissapeared from the scene it would be a lot less entertaining.

I moved to a town with less then 3% unemployment, their banks are not failing, their economy seems strong, I just paid cash for a three bedroom foreclosier that sold at auction for $18,000.00 with a full basement. A California Real Estate Broker had a $120,000.00 bad asset loan on this out of state rental house. Built in 1972 it needs a little work, but the price was right. The day I hit town I got a job paying $21.00 hour with full medical and dental and that small business owner claims he has been trying to fill that possition for over a year. My property taxes in this state are homesteded at $89.00 a year. The state government claims their budget is in the green. The state is mostly Republicans and everybody goes to church on Sunday. Guessing that is why it is called the bible belt. Shockingly, you “can” drink the water unfiltered out of the tap. Knowone here seems to be deep in your democratic “slavery” called credit and refinance. Working, saving and investing; or legalized slavery and debtors prisons? Just like domestic violence, it is about control of the masses.

  3. JohnnyVoter Says:

California Democrats have put aside any notion of bipartisanship and instead have jammed through a massive budget spending TAX package in California, that originally was rammed into the Budget process as INCREASED FEES.

Many individual Democrat legislators agree with the stout Republicans who held firm against the $15 Billion TAX increases to support Democrat controlled Unions.

Thank You Dave Cogdill and others!

  4. RealAmerica Says:

Rep. Kanjowski noted that on 9/11/08 the Fed Reserve saw $550B disappear from money market funds in an hour and turned off the spigot before it turned into a multi-trillion dollar loss to the economy.

Anything in this bill prevent that from happening again?

    I thought not.
