State’s top income tax scofflaw is from East Bay

Thursday, April 9th, 2009 at 3:15 pm in General, taxes.

State law directs the Franchise Tax Board to publish an annual list of the top 250 tax scofflaws – people or companies with liened state income tax delinquencies greater than $100,000 – and today’s that lucky day!

As it happens, the person by far at the top of the list – with the greatest debt – is one Winson T. Lee of Lafayette, who owes a whopping $9.94 million in personal income tax; a lien has been in place on him since the end of 2002. I can’t find a listed phone number for him.

(UPDATE @ 4:12 P.M. — My partner-in-crime, Lisa Vorderbrueggen, grabbed Mr. Lee’s phone number from a database we’ve got; I left him a message, and will update further if I receive a reply.)

Everyone on the list was mailed a certified letter, return receipt requested, giving them a chance to settle their liability before this list was published. To get off the list, they’d have to pay their debt in full; agree to pay in installments; strike a compromise deal with the state; or prove they’ve filed for bankruptcy.

Anyway, I’ve broken out all the Bay Area folks and companies, owing almost $31.6 million of the statewide list’s $191.2 million; see ‘em after the jump…

  1. John W Says:

Based on the state’s top marginal rate of 10.3% (ouch), owing $9.9 million implies taxes owed on about $96 million of income. Even the smallest amount on the list — $230k — implies taxes owed on more than $2 million income. If you’re going to be a tax scofflaw, might as well do it up big.

  2. RR Says:

    List is meaningless.

  3. Josh Richman Says:

Just because you don’t like taxes doesn’t mean people don’t have a legal obligation to pay them, RR.

  4. John W Says:

The list looks like a target-rich opportunity. However, I’m guessing a significant number of those on the it are completely insolvent for one reason or another.

Isn’t there some way to arrest these people? They seem to have learned that cheating the state (and all honest taxpayers) has no downside.

  6. TERRY WORAM Says:

At a time like this with salaried folk paying their taxes and struggling to make ends meet, show no mercy to these high rollers who choose not to pay their tax quarterly and instead spend on lavish homes, cars, toys, etc. Why cant the State start seizing their (i.e. OUR) assets? Next time you see that fabulous house or fancy wheels, consider that many are ill-gotten gains vs the American dream.

  7. Frank Says:

If you go look at the whole list, Dionne Warwick is in the top 10! I guess she still doesn’t know the way to San Jose.

This is an outdated list. My friend was on it because the state made a gross error when calculating taxes due. This page should be removed or updated, check out the current list…http://www.ftb.ca.gov/individuals/txdlnqnt.shtml
