McNerney the target of GOP robocalls

The National Republican Congressional Committee announced a robocall campaign in the district of Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton.

It’s part of the NRCC”s plan to target 43 members they view as vulnerable in the 2010 election.

McNerney’s district is slated for robocalls while the NRCC intends to spend in other states more bucks on television and radio ads.  (Click here to read The Hill’s Briefing Blog, which has a nice outline of the NRCC’s campaign.)

The automated calls criticize McNerney’s recent vote in favor of the federal budget and attempt to link him to the Republican’s arch nemesis, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Of course, none of this angst will amount to much if the Republicans don’t find a viable opponent in District 11. So far, the field of potential challengers remains curiously blank. The 2008 Republican nominee, Dean Andal, dropped out of contention a few month ago.

Read on for the NRCC’s press release but keep in mind, the verbiage comes from an office where people are paid to spin:

WASHINGTON, D.C. The NRCC announced a new phone call blitz aimed at holding Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-CA) accountable for authorizing to spend American taxpayers’ money at the rate of a billion dollars an hour.  The phone calls confront McNerney for endorsing a reckless spending spree in Washington and authorizing over $1.2 trillion in new spending so far this year.

“Jerry McNerney has failed to be honest about his willingness to support a pork-filled stimulus package and a budget that taxes, spends and borrows in excess at the expense of his constituents in California,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain.  “We will continue to hold Jerry McNerney accountable for rubber-stamping Nancy Pelosi’s agenda that will burden middle-class families and inflict further damage on an already fragile economy for years to come.”

The phone call blitz began this week during the congressional recess while Jerry McNerney will have to face his constituents and try to explain why he voted for a pork-laden stimulus package and a $3.5 trillion budget.

Below is a sample script for the phone calls:

Hello I’m calling from the National Republican Congressional Committee with an urgent message. Congressman Jerry McNerney and Nancy Pelosi are working together to create a massive budget deficit that could raise taxes. A major newspaper says they have already authorized $1.2 trillion in new spending in less than 2 months…that is $24 billion dollars every day…$1 billion every hour. Now they want to spend even more…Congressman Jerry McNerney let Nancy Pelosi get away with passing a budget with a trillion dollar deficit…it’s been called the most fiscally irresponsible budget in the history of the federal government…..and that is saying a lot..Call Congressman Jerry McNerney at 202-225-3121 and tell them to put the brakes on spending. Paid for by The National Republican Congressional Committee. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee. McNerney still has not supported Ron Pauls’s HR 1207 to audit the Federal Reserve. He also along with the other Spendocrats signed off on the bail-out bill without so much as reading it. We need to send all of these Spendocrats packing in 2010. Pelosi and McNerney would be a good start, maybe they can haul out Reid and Dodd on their way out. See you at the Tea Party on July 04, 2009.
