President Barack Obama has announced the formal nomination of Rep. Ellen Tauscher as undersecretary of Arms Control and International Security at the U.S. State Department.

The nomination will go to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, whose members will schedule a confirmation hearing. A date has not been set although speculation has suggested it will occur in late May or early June.

Tauscher had indicated she will resign her Congressional post if she is confirmed. As of that date, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has 14 days to call for a special election where voters will select her replacement.

The first of the potentially two-part special election will take place approximately two months after her resignation. If a candidate receives 50 percent plus one vote, however, he or she will win the seat outright. If not, the top voter-getter in each party will compete in a runoff approximately two months later.
