Why does’t the Government just get out of the marriage business. Call all of them “civil unions”. That way everyone’s getting equal treatment. Leave the religious aspects to the priests, rabbis and ministers. It’s the only solution.

As the Republican right wing celebrate the ruling that the Prop 8 52% can amend the constitution, be ready for the un-intended consequence that now a clear majority from the electorate can amend the constitution to get rid of the 2/3 rule on the budget. There will be a ‘gotcha’ coming out of this disappointment yet.

“How many times must the voters express their wishes?”

As many times as somebody is willing and able to put it on the ballot. Until we get it right. Practice makes perfect!

Some think it could go back and forth for years. Repeal Prop. 8; reinstate it; repeal it, etc. I doubt that. Once the majority votes to recognize same sex marriages (i.e., civil marriage), that’s the way it will stay.

Interesting that conservative attorney and former Solicitor General, Theodore Olson is handling the case for the people appealing to the U.S. Supreme court to invalidate Prop. 8. What’s up with that? He’s hardly the person you would expect to agree to handle a case like that. And, no way the U.S. Supreme Court, as presently constituted, will rule for same sex marriage.

The Twitter generation will overturn this at the ballot box, even in Modesto. Next time around, the opponents of same sex marriage will not have the bogeyman of “activist judges” or Gavin’s “like it or not” scream to energize their side. Plus, we’ll no longer be the first. We’ll be catching up with Iowa and at least four other states. We’ll be down to the “if we allow this, people will want to marry their horse” argument.

How about local option on gay marriage? County by county, city by city. It worked for alcoholic beverage sales for years. Let SF become the gay honeymoon capital; let Modesto opt out.
