David Harmer in, Tom Del Beccaro out in CD-10

Lisa had reported the possibility in April, but now it’s official: Republican attorney David Harmer – son of former California lieutenant governor and Southern California state legislator John Harmer – says he’ll be a candidate in the 10th Congressional District should Rep. Ellen Tauscher, D-Alamo, be confirmed to the State Department post to which she is nominated.
“Now more than ever, we need Congress to practice prudent fiscal management,” he said in his news release. “Instead, Congress is mortgaging our children’s future with trillions of dollars in new debt. It’s the opposite of the American dream. We’re living beyond our means and leaving the bill for our kids.”
Harmer, of San Ramon, said he believes the district’s voters share his commitment to fiscal responsibility. “The 2008 elections offered a great opportunity for change, but a doubling of the national debt within four years and massive corporate bailouts is not the change we had in mind I am running for Congress to work toward common-sense solutions.”
And although this will be an uphill battle for him – the district has an 18-percentage-point Democratic registration edge – Harmer said he already has raised more than $150,000 for this race. Spokesman Michael Caporusso said if this early support is any indication, “we’re well on our way to raising over $1 million for this election.”
California Republican Party Vice Chairman Tom Del Beccaro of Lafayette told me this morning he won’t be a candidate – “It’s just not the right time for me,” he said – and we’re hearing that Contra Costa Sheriff Warren Rupf probably won’t seek the seat either (although I couldn’t immediately reach him this morning to confirm).
Other potential GOP candidates include Fairfield City Councilwoman Catherine Moy, who has set up an exploratory committee Web site; 2008 10th District nominee Nicholas Gerber of Moraga; and CBS News Radio National Business Correspondent and former KTVU Channel 2 Business Editor Brian Banmiller.

Times look grim for this country. Consider this excerpt from an editorial in the Australian Financial Times today:
“Yesterday was a holiday in the US. Little news from that quarter. But while Americans were enjoying their backyard barbecues, the rest of the world turned.
“Obama plans ‘leaner’ car industry,” says the BBC.
While most readers will focus on the last three words of that sentence, we direct your attention to the first two. The subject is the important part…not the predicate.
That the car industry may or may not get ‘leaner’ is of little interest to us. It will do what it needs to do. But that the president of the United States of America is now creating the business plan for an automobile company is surely a sign of something big. The world has already turned…perhaps more than we realize.
It was only a few months ago…we’re almost sure…that a private company figured out for itself how it would compete. If it was well- managed – and lucky – it would grow. If it made a serious mistake, it would go out of business…leaving the premises vacant for another entrepreneur.
Americans not only accepted this model, they applauded it. They thought the “free enterprise” system was the best in the world. They believed it was responsible for their wealth…their progress…and their place in the world.
Now, the Obama team is calling the shots itself.
The role of government is commonly misunderstood. It is thought to be an impartial judge…an objective arbiter between competing interests, always asserting the common interest over the narrow interests of the competitors themselves. It is nothing of the sort. It has its own interests…its own delusions of competence…its own lusts for power and money.
When the pendulum swings towards Washington it is always bad news. For no matter how big a mess GM’s owners, managers and workers made of the auto business…Washington is sure to make a bigger one.”

He is a strong supporter in the rights of the California people to retain property privacy and all the rights that come along with it. The Antioch Grove asked Harmer about views on the housing crisis at the latest Antioch campaign meeting. Harmer stated that the reason why a housing crisis exists is because the government has subsidized Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. He’s of the opinion that the government should not subsidize these lending institutions anymore. Thus, Harmer’s slogan, ‘No More Bailouts!’ literally means stop paying lending institutions. [...]
