The first candidate forum for Democrats who plan to run for the 10th Congressional District has been set for June 19 in Walnut Creek.
Four of the county’s Democratic clubs will host the event from 7-9 p.m. at the Contra Costa Jewish Community Center, 2071 Tice Valley Blvd. in Walnut Creek.
The invited candidates, in alphabetic order, include: civil rights attorney Tony Bothwell; Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan, D-Alamo; state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Concord; Lt. Governor John Garamendi of Walnut Grove; San Francisco District Attorney’s Office investigator Adriel Hampton of Dublin; and Iraq War veteran Anthony Woods of Fairfield.
It’s apparently an inconsequential detail but there is no actual election date yet.
The incumbent, Rep. Ellen Tauscher, D-Alamo, is expected to resign later this month after the expected confirmation of her nomination as Undersecretary for Arms Control and International Security. The confirmation hearing with Senate Foreign Relations Committee is scheduled for June 9.
After Tauscher resigns, the governor will call a special election, the subsequent candidate filing period will open and permit would-be members of Congress to officially state their intentions.
The sponsoring clubs include the Lamorinda Democratic Club, Democrats of Rossmoore, San Ramon Valley Democtats and the Diablo Valley Democratic Club.
