As expected, the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee endorsed Rep. Ellen Tauscher, D-Alamo, this week as its choice for Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security at the State Department, putting her nomination by President Barack Obama one step closer to confirmation.

Her name appeared as one of six nominees that will now go to the full Senate for their final confirmation votes.

It’s unclear when the Senate will take up the question of Tauscher’s nomination but there is no evidence that she will face any controversy or protected delay. A minor blogosphere rumble hinted weeks ago at opposition from conservatives unhappy with Obama’s endorsement of a worldwide drawdown of nuclear weapons but it never amounted to anything.

In fact, members of the Foreign Relations Committee on both sides of the political aisle praised her record and abilities during her confirmation hearing last week.

Tauscher has said she will resign her congressional seat when she is confirmed, which will trigger a special election to select her replacement. Numerous candidates have already started raising and spending money in the hopes of winning her seat.

    Hi,
In today’s paper you wrote a short article about the upcoming forum in Walnut Creek for Ellen Tauscher’s seat. I cannot find that piece anywhere on line, neither here nor on google.
Do you know why the cctimes website didn’t post this? Actually, I get the sense that very little of their print edition is available on their websites. Do you know why, or what’s up with that. Are they planning to do something about it? Who should I email?

Are there any real people working at the Times still, they certainly aren’t at the forum section?

And thank you for your well written pieces, particularly the one on making cal/government pension data available online. Is that hearing still scheduled for July 2?

    thanks again,
