CD10 round-up: Deadlines, dollars and famous author

By Lisa Vorderbrueggen
Tuesday, July 7th, 2009 at 5:18 pm in 2009 CD10 special election.

In the interest of keeping up with the fast-moving events of the 10th Congressional District special election, here is a round-up of what caught my attention today. (Sidenote: I’ll post round-ups between now and Sept. 1 as warranted. You can also find the latest list and links to the declared candidates and/or those who have filed for the seat at the bottom of this post.)

++++++

Would-be Congressional candidates have until July 20 at 5 p.m. to complete their paperwork and pay the $1,740 filing fee, according to the special primary election schedule put out by election officials today. Click here for relevant documents provided by the Contra Costa Election Division.

The Central Labor Council of Alameda County endorsed both state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Concord, and Democratic Lt. Governor John Garamendi for the 10th District. The two men have been competing for labor endorsements but Alameda County union leaders must have decided they did not want to make either of these pro-labor elected officials mad.

Democrat Anthony Woods of Fairfield claims to have raised more than $100,000 from 800 donors in the past three months, while Garamendi’s campaign says he has collected $300,000 from 350 donors. We’ll have to take their word for it … for now. The numbers came from the campaigns of the two candidates who opted to put their own spins on their fundraising prowess prior to the July 15 Federal Election Commission deadline in the first major campaign finance reports of this campaign.

I will collect the official FEC campaign finance numbers for all the candidates after the deadline and make contrasts and comparisons when I have the official documents in my hands. The FEC will also require additional reports leading up to the election but it has not yet posted the schedule on its web site.

I was given a copy this morning of a flier for a July 11 event in Lafayette where author Marianne Williamson is scheduled to speak about her potential run for Congress in the 10th District.

I’m told that Williamson is a very famous person although I confess I have never heard of her. (That doesn’t mean much, though. I’m a poor student of popular culture.) Per her web site, she is a spiritual teacher, author of numerous New York Times bestselling books and appears regularly on Oprah, which probably means she is more famous than any of the other candidates.

It’s unclear where she lives or if she is serious about running for office.

In any event, I can’t attend the “Conversation with Marianne Williamson,” which will be held at 1 p.m. at the Lafayette Christian Church, 584 Glenside Drive in Lafayette. If you go, let me know what you think of her.

  1. Rich Says:

    Garamendi has a rep for being a blowhard, and he’s been a lifelong Sacramento Valley politician to boot. He also has zero ties to the CD 10 district, which is mostly a Contra Costa – bay area district. On top of that he has been running for office since the early 1970′s. For this reason, this is the only slogan that works for his campaign. Garamendi for Congress: A Breath of Hot, Stale Air from the Congested, Smog Choked Central Valley for Contra Costa.
