It is swell that the Pres was nominated and received this award. And, while I am a huge fan of the Pres and believe he at least possesses a modicum of incentive to pursue a path that is in the best long-term interest of the country, I, like many others, was also surprised at his being awarded this prestigious honor.

I have to agree with some of those who suggest that Mr. Obama's nomination may not be completely justified by his own actions.

Based on some recent business travels in Europe, I think it was, in large measure, Mr. Bush and the fear he and his policies created that set the stage for Mr. Obama's nomination and eventual award.

It hard to get two people to agree on anything. If 85% of people like there heath care why are we going there? We have no money. Start with Medicare and show us! How you can save money by getting rid of fraud.
I guess now we can look at past winners of the prize and wonder?

I thought it was a joke at first, another case of full credit for doing nothing.

Never saw anyone who did so little that spent so much time getting credit for it.

Reads like bad reality TV, famous for being famous and nothing else. AI assume a Pulitzer Prize for Paris Hilton is coming next.

A new commemorative coin will be available for $29.95 later this week.

Kudos to some Republicans, including some of those quoted here and John McCain, for showing a little class. It's not like Obama lobbied for this. He was as surprised as any of us but did his usual elegant job of putting it in proper context. I recommend reading his complete statement. The fact that Obama got nominated two weeks into his presidency is no big deal or at all unusual. Lots of celebrity names get "nominated" without much expectation of serious consideration. It's obvious that the peace prize committee used this year's award to recognize the shift in how the country approaches its international leadership role under Obama and, probably, to put some pressure on Obama to continue down a constructive path of engagement. I'm sure they had AfPak and Iran in mind. I trust Obama not to let that influence his decisions. Unlike the Nobel awards in science and medicine, the peace prize is handled through a separate process and has always had a political edge to it. In fact, one of the committe members said as much. If an American was to be chosen, Bill and Melinda Gates come to mind, or Bill Clinton. But obviously the committee had an agenda. All that said, my favorite part of this is watching the bobblehead wingers like Limbaugh come unglued. It's so predictable, and so pathetically funny. First there was the outburst of laughter over Chicago not getting the Olympics. Now, they just can't stand it that Obama got a win, even if it is one he didn't seek.
