Even though I’m a supporter of his, I have questions about this approach. Will businesses really hire people they otherwise wouldn’t hire because of a temporary tax credit? I wouldn’t. More likely, the credit will just be a bonus for hiring that they were planning anyway. Also, why should the credit just be for people who are unemployed? Hiring is hiring. If a business hires somebody who is already working, that creates a job opening elsewhere. Finally, if I were an employer who took a hit to the bottom line in order to keep people working during the recession, I might be a little upset about other businesses, who laid off people, getting the tax credit goodies. At least the program only lasts two years. So, if it bombs, it won’t do much harm.
