Obama picks Saint Mary’s College

UPDATE 3:17 p.m.: Obama was right … about basketball, anyway. Saint Mary’s beat Richmond 80 to 71. It’s the first time in 51 years that Saint Mary’s basketball team made it past the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Saint Mary’s College in Moraga is trumpeting the news that President Barack Obama picked its basketball team as the winner in today’s game with Richmond: http://www.stmarys-ca.edu/news-and-events/item.html?ID=4320

I confess, I know nothing about March madness unless it we’re talking about this month’s candidate filing and campaign finance deadlines.

But a colleague and Saint Mary’s alum tells me this selection of the winners through each step of the basketball tournament season — called brackets — is wildly popular. I’ll take his word for it.

To clarify for your reading audience, Lisa, Basketball is played with the biggest balls in all of sports. Volleyball and soccer (called football outside the US) is played with smaller balls, and baseball with even smaller balls. Golf is played with the smallest balls in sports, which may partly explain why Tiger Woods hid from the press for awhile. Try to memorize this, it’s a test…..

There’s also a sport, Lisa, of which you’re probably aware, the season for which starts around November 3, 2010. The players in this game, currently play without balls, but after that date, suddenly use them. This coming winter, this sport, which involves balancing and juggling, will be played especially hard, to make up for lost time.
