McNerney's vote may have been the politically smart way to go, but I also think his vote and comments are consistent with his real views. I have my doubts about what we can achieve in Afghanistan/Pakistan but think we need to give the current strategy a chance to work before shifting to Plan B, whatever that might be. My sense is that McNerney has the same mixed views. I know the Repubs like to characterize McNerney as a Nancy Pelosi puppet, but I see a moderate in the Ellen Tauscher tradition, who has been finding his own voice on a range of issues beyond his initial concerns (Iraq and alternative energy). I listened in on a health reform conference call he did the other day with AARP. Some of the questions were about VA health care matters. I was impressed at how passionate he is about veterans' issues. He's a quiet-spoken guy, but he really gets his dander up when he hears about a problem some vet might be having dealing with the system.
