Biden in Oakland to raise $$$ for McNerney
By Josh Richman
Friday, October 1st, 2010 at 9:39 am in 2010 election, Barbara Boxer, campaign finance, Jerry McNerney, U.S. House, U.S. Senate.
Apparently Vice President Joe Biden spent the night at the Claremont Resort and Spa, and is now doing a fundraiser in Oakland for the re-election campaign of Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton., according to Berkeleyside.
“The hotel was swarming with black-clad Secret Service officials. Cop cars from Berkeley and the Alameda County Sheriff’s office blocked the rear entrance and a mammoth mobile unit from Alameda County Bomb Squad stood sentry near the health club. Yet visitors were free to wander throughout the hotel grounds,” the local news blog reported.
The Hill notes that the National Republican Congressional Committee has been running ads against McNerney, but Biden’s visit spells the first big boost for him from national Democrats. After raising money for McNerney, Biden will travel today to Orange County, where he’ll do another event for U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.; tickets for that Laguna Beach fundraiser range from $500 to $10,000.

This is one of the closest House races in the country. I am surprised that it is receiving virtually no coverage. Maybe it’s simply that theres not much to say about these two rather dull candidates. Nevertheless, this could be a pivotal seat for the nation.

Ted’s right. Not even that much attention in the Bay Area. Jerry’s not flashy, but he works hard — back in the district nearly every week, actually reading important bills, answering written correspondence with substantive answers etc. Harmer might not seem that dull if the media focused on some of the hard-right, religious metaphor-peppered comments he makes when speaking to supporters. Jerry needs a “tracker” to attend some of those gatherings.

Any published polls on this race?

I saw a reference to a poll at http://www.fivethirtyeight.com . It showed a 49 to 49 tie, but due to “enthusiasm factor”, the pollster has it as a lean Republican.

scroll down for poll by Ayres August 23-25.
Harmer 45%, McNerney 44% 400 likely voters.
I’d say its pretty damn close. Half the votes will be cast by the end of next week

Why did Biden hide in Berkeley, miles away from McNerdney’s district?
Who is ashamed of whom?

Thanks for the poll info. Not looking good for Jerry.

John W says of McNerney…”answering written correspondence with substantive answers”. What! I’m in McNerney’s district and when I have contacted his office numerous time over the past year, I get back form letters with the Dem talking points. He doesn’t hold face-to-face town halls and instead had telephone conference calls where questions are screened before hand and the caller has no opportunity for follow up or rebuttal. Then he’ll hold a “congress at your corner” where he’ll usher 20 or so folks into a library room and take questions privately, face-to-face, but still not in a public forum. He voted for the stimulus that has put us almost a Trillion more in debt, he was part of a congress that put us 1.3 trillion more in debt in one year, he voted for cap-and-trade, was a deciding vote on Obamacare, and his voting record matches Pelosi’s over 96% of the time. The Dems are rewarding his liberal voting record with big $$$. In just the past week, I’ve received 5 mailings from the CA Dem and DNCC demonizing his opponent with blatant distortions and lies. McNerney knows he can’t run on his record so he’s running his campaign from the cesspool. CD11 (and America) deserves much better.

Jerry McNerney is just another Democrat voting for things we don’t want or need. I’m voting for Harmer.

Re #10
If the correspondence was as combative and unfoucussed as the above suggests, it’s no wonder it would be answered with a form letter. Fact is, I’ve corresponded with McNerney several times via e-mail and received responses with very specific and thoughtful answers to my questions or comments. My brother-in-law, who is Republican, told me about a letter a friend of his (also Republican) wrote to McNerney that included both questions and criticisms of the health care bill. He was surprised and impressed at the detailed reply he got back — still doesn’t plan to vote for McNerney but respects him. You say that he doesn’t hold face-to-face town halls but then go on to mention his “Congress At Your Corner” gatherings, where they usher in 20 or so at a time. How are those not public forums? I’ve gone(Dougherty Valley public library). And the 20 or so at a time means everybody, friend or foe, gets to ask questions or make comments and have them answered — with the whole group present, not “in private” as was stated above. Town Halls may have served a purpose at one time, until the rowdies turned them into useless, sign-waving, “keep your government hands off my Medicare,” and “don’t kill Granny” shout-a-thons. I’ll agree that the “At Your Corner” format isn’t very helpful for people who just want to go make noise. As for the issues you mention, some of us happen to agree with those votes that you despise. But that’s another whole discussion.

Pollsters are practicing the “art” of self fulfilling profency. Note how these polls got it WRONG: Survey USA, Harmer to win with 6 point spread. AAF-Ayers, Harmer to win with 1 pont spread. I don’t see the smug GOPers shouting about their “win” now.
