Living outside of the district does not match the definition of a representative, so thus, knowing the issues and living among them each day are not the same. We have a major problem in country with the disconnection of our representatives who do live within their congressional districts.

Who cares where you live as long as one knows the issues in that district. All congressional candidates know what the issues are, if they are running for a seat. The trick is to get local government to cooperate with there congressman when they are elected. Colbert has no knowledge of election process.

Agreed. Lisa’s comment is no slam on Garamendi. Coming away from a guest appearance on Colbert looking cool and unembarrassed is no small feat.

Former Republican Pennslvania governor and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge was the guest last night, in his current capacity as a “consultant” to the natural gas industry. Colbert, in his own humorous way, hit Ridge with everything he could on the negatives, real and rumored, of hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), including video of fire coming from a kitchen water faucet. I have to admit that Ridge came off looking great.

There are public situations and there is Stephen Colbert. Who could prepare for Stephen Colbert? The guy is an expert at embarrassing people.

It concerns me that someone feels its necessary to include “By and large, Garamendi didn’t embarass himself” in their assessment of Congressmen Garamendi’s appearance on the Colbert Show. As former Lt. Governor and Insurance Commissioner of the sixth largest economy in the world, one would think he probably knows how to handle himself in public situations.
