Tauscher did vote to invade Iraq, as Ralph H. reminds us. Whenever constituents asked Congresswoman Tauscher tough questions about her support for the Iraq war, she got belligerent with them and implied that they were dim-witted. If YouTube had existed a few years earlier, her State Dept. appointment would have never happened because people everywhere would’ve seen how “undiplomatic” actually is in confrontational situations. Her Iraq War vote must be held to a higher standard because she served on the House National Security Committee in 2002 and she presumably had the best information, yet she was the only California Democrat on that committee (of three) who voted for the war. That war-monger owes her State Dept. post solely to the fact that she is a “Friend of Hillary.”

The 11th Congressional district is a lot differnt than the 7th, that’s for sure. If Miller is elected he will be representing Alamo, Danville, BlackHawk, Walnut Creek, Orinda, Moraga, Lafayette, and Clayton. That doesn’t look like George Miller country to me, I’m guessing Obama Care isn’t real popular in these upscale enclaves. The George Miller I know is a fiery liberal with a passion for social justice, so he appears to be a fish out of water in this district.

My own opinions of Miller or Tauscher aside, I was simply observing that the makeup of the district Miller will now run to represent is decidedly less-Left and more independent than his current district. He’ll undoubtedly have huge financial and union backing advantages over anybody who might decide to run against him. But I suspect a strong, centrist-minded Democrat or Republican (if there are any centrists left) could survive the open primary and run a strong race in the general election.

Tauscher voted to invade Iraq. Miller and GOP Presidential candidate Ron Paul voted against invading Iraq. The Lafayette Crosses and the MtDP&J are now in Miller’s new District. Half of the Federal Budget is Military. Half of the World’s Military expenses are by the USA. All this for a dozen terrorists!

Interesting. Thanks for the clarification. I’m glad you said “in this new district,” rather than in “his” new district. I have nothing against Mr. Miller, but some of the commenting on these new districts makes it seem as though it’s almost automatic as to who will represent them. With the open primary, the fact that much of the new district has no history with Miller, and the more moderate (Tauscher-like) character of the district, you would think there might be opportunities for new blood to shake up the old guard a bit.

John, the commission split Martinez (splitting the county seat: why?), roughly at HWY4, with the northern portion thrown in with Solano County and Thompson’s district; the southern portion, where Miller happens to live, will be in this new 11th district.

Generally agree with John W … the Tri-Valley — including Livermore-Dublin-Pleasanton along with San Ramon Valley plus Walnut Creek — should be in one congressional district.

Funny, the commenters who dislike “Gorgeous George” were probably the same ones who supported the redistricting commission in the first place! Joke’s on them, I guess.
