This action by Safeway dismays me. I have spent many weekend afternoons in front of several different Safeways in the East Bay registering voters and getting signatures on petitions to help get propositions on the ballots.

I have always commended Safeway for their community involvement. They are better than any chain I know of in this matter.

I can understand them wanting to establish rules. When I was volunteering at one of these table, I always got permission (in writing, and in advance) from the store manager. I always checked in with the Store Manager before setting up our table. I followed their rules, and was very careful not to be in the doorway and not to be obnoxious. (Unless someone got obnoxious with me. I can give it as good as I get it when needed.)

Safeway has the right to set rules, but to select and single out certain groups is wrong. I love the kids and the veterans. I donate to them almost every time. But you know, some of those cute little girl scouts can get a little irritating in their enthusiasm as well.

I say that Safeway should set the same rules for everyone. If their rules are not followed, then make the people leave. The people in that picture were wrong. I agree with Safeway on that one. Call the police if you have to, but to automatically disallow paid signature gatherers is wrong and Safeway should be ashamed.

I have no problem with paid petition gatherers as long as they don't cheat (like ACORN), and they follow the rules and don't get obnoxious. I personally have not been harassed by any of them.

I was approached by a signature gatherer at Safeway this afternoon.

No one seemed to be harassing or photographing him, but maybe I just wasn't there at the right time.

I don't know what he was working for but I held up my hand to indicate that I wasn't interested and he backed off immediately.
