Much as it pains me to say so, it looks like you win on "phantasmagorical." I initially looked it up in an older Webster's hard copy dictionary, which listed both "phantasmagoric" and "phantasmagorial" but not "phantasmagorical" as the adjectives. Wiktionary uses my version, citing Oxford English Dictionary. However, the Oxford online dictionary uses your version, as does Merriam-Webster online. You can find online dictionary sites using both -- i.e., one or the other. But most use your version. I bow in humility, but don't let it go to your head.

Re: #12

So he (or any other prez) should stay on campus just to avoid juxtapositional irony? Is there a more logical time to escape Foggy Bottom than when Congress is in recess and therefore not available for meetings?

I confess that, with my limited vocabulary, I had to look it up. But the word is phantasmagorial, without the "c." Anyway, somebody better come up with a magic trick.

My post was not about the number of vacation days O'bummer takes but rather the irony of the juxtaposition of his announcement of his big jobs program speech with his departure on vacation.

Expect another phantasmagorical failure like the O'bummer stimulus.

Elwood, I'd expect you to be pleased that Obama is on vacation, since you believe everything he does or proposes to do only makes things worse.

FDR spend lots of time in Warm Springs and still managed to do a pretty good job on that WW2 thing. Reagan and Bush took more vacations than Obama, including during difficult times. I remember one long weekend when Obama was criticized for skipping town to visit tornado victims in Alabama (obviously political), to give a college commencement speech in Florida and then rush back to D.C. to crack jokes at the White House Correspondents dinner. Then, to cap it all off, he played golf the next morning. A few hours later, Bin Laden's fate was Sealed. Point being, a prez is on duty 24/7 regardless of party or geography. I didn't think much of Reagan or Bush but not once wisecracked about their R&R absences.

Re: #8

First, "left wing Dem" hardly characterizes my views. If you had read any of my posts on public employee unions or California's dysfunctional tax system, for example, you would know that. I'm a proud lefty on social issues, a pragmatic centrist on other issues and believe in fiscal discipline (but not the Tea Party version of discipline).

"A job is a job" is an accurate statement from a Texas perspective. I already gave credit to Texas for stealing jobs from CA and am indeed unhappy that CA can't get it's act together on that.

I don't know how many of the 276,000 new jobs were shifted from other states; only that Rick Perry likes to brag about his success in taking jobs from CA and other states. But let's say it was 100,000 of the 276,000. Let's say the national economy created 750,000 new jobs in the same time period (net of public sector layoffs). You can't then claim that Texas created 37% (276,000) of the 750,000, because 100,000 of those were not new jobs to the national economy. Got it?
