One was to name the new Benicia-Martinez Bridge for Congressman George Miller. Miller rewarded DeSaulnier with $1,000′s in campaign contributions. Miller’s lobbyist son, George IV (why does this sound like royalty?), gave DeSaulnier $1,000′s more (George IV lobbies DeSaulnier for various special interest clients. isn’t that convenient?). Another of DeSaulnier’s bills was to name a section of I-680 for another politician, Dan Boatwright, who personified the old-school, “wheeler-dealer” type of politics (working out a backroom deal to channel EBMUD water to massive real estate developments during the early 1990s drought). Boatwright promptly rewarded DeSaulnier with $1,000′s in campaign contributions. It’s bad enough that DeSaulnier and his ilk are wasting the Legislature’s time with such useless bills. It’s even worse that legislators like DeSaulnier are enriching their campaign coffers in exchange for naming OUR public assets for THEIR political cronies.
