Jean Quan taking heat from Olbermann, MoveOn

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan is taking heat from liberal activists and commentators across the nation for the police crackdown on Occupy Oakland and resultant clashes that led to injuries including an Iraq war veteran’s cracked skull.

Current TV commentator Keith Olbermann castigated Quan on Wednesday night, demanding that she either fire Interim Police Chief Howard Jordan or resign her own office.

And, in a rapid response ad released Thursday morning, MoveOn.org Civic Action urges people to demand that Quan take responsibility; the ad will run starting Friday in the Bay Area.

“A violent crackdown on peaceful protesters, like we saw in Oakland on Tuesday night, is something we expect to see under repressive regimes overseas–not here in America,” MoveOn.org Executive Director Justin Ruben said in a release announcing the ad. “Mayor Quan has not done enough to take responsibility for this violent overreaction, nor has she promised that the protesters will be able to continue to exercise their First Amendment rights. The Occupy Movement that has taken off across the country is giving voice to a majority of Americans who are being left behind in this economy. Mayor Quan, and the few other mayors who’ve begun really cracking down on Occupy protests, need to stop doing Wall Street’s dirty work for them.”

Who gives a flying flop what Olbermann and MoveOn think?

Both are simply mouthpieces for the radical left.

The Oakland protesters are the usual East Bay cesspool of anarchists, communists, criminals and kooks.

I watched Mike Barnacle (sp?) on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” this morning. They showed video that made the scene in Oakland look like Iraq in 2004. Barnacle called it a “police riot.” Joe Scarborough, former Florida GOP congressman from the Gingrich “Contract with America” class of 1994 said that he didn’t like to jump to conclusions without having all the facts but then proceeded to agree with Barnacle. I wanted to reach into the TV screen and choke them, as they obviously didn’t know what was going on.

    @ #2

Well, what did you expect from MessNBC?

They, Olbermann and MoveOn are all propaganda arms of the CPUSA.

    Re: #3

I’d expect it from Al Sharpton, Lawrence O’Donnell, Ed Schultz or Rachel Maddow. I wouldn’t expect it from Joe Scarborough. He’s mellowed from his days as a Gingrich conservative in the House, but he’s still a moderate-to-conservative Republican.

After the cops knocked down a 24 year old male Iraq War vet with either a tear gas canister, or a rubber bullet, that fractured his skull, and left him powerless on the ground, when other caring people went to his aid to get him out of the line of fire, one of the cops soft lobbed a flash grenade into that group, so as to harm one or more of them as well.

All of the above is fact, as recorded on unimpeachable video record.

    Keith is right.

    Quan has to go.

  • Elwood

Quan has to go because she doesn’t have a clue.

She’s in WAY over her head.

The freaks are now back in the plaza putting up tents.

The cops should have kept the plaza clear, but Quan and the other useful idiots on the Oakland city council are spineless.

Whadda, madda, el fascist Hellwoody — don’t like to see the end result of the fascist police state you and your dittohead morons like to espouse as the be-all, end-all for America’s ills?

I hope your gated community, er, compound (since in your mind, community = communism) has a high enough fence to keep out all of the empowered po’ folk from cuttin’ you a new back ho’ when dey get’s de hands on yo’…

Too bad the Mayor was too busy to monitor the protest situation. She was probably preparing to dedicate a new program to encourage new businesses in Fruitvale.

  • John W

The police chief (former) resigned because he was being micromanaged and couldn’t make a move without clearing it with the mayor. But now she says she didn’t know what the new police chief was planning. This is a woman who got into a public spat with another councilwoman over a reserved parking place perk.

Missing from all the discussion of the police action is any insight into its motivation. The OPD has it in for Quan for 1) winning the 2010 mayoral election despite all the funding they gave to their preferred candidate, and 2) for what they see as “throwing under the bus” former Chief Anthony Batts. This was their way of throwing her under the bus.

And on a completely different, but not unrelated note, when you see the spokesperson for the police officers union giving an interview to the media wearing a San Ramon Valley High School sports team jacket, you have to wonder if the police don’t also like rubbing Oakland residents’ noses in the fact that most of them live elsewhere.

    @ #12

Most cops don’t live in the city where they work, just like most people don’t sleep in their office.

In the case of Oakland, who the hell would want to live there if they didn’t have to?

So the OPD gassed the violent rabble just to make Quan look bad? Why bother when she’s doing such a fine job of it all by herself?

Oh, and there are Martians living in the sewers!

Too bad Gil Scot Heron didn’t live longer. He would have seen that, contrary to his title, The Revolution WILL Be Televised. I see a Michael Moore project.
