If we had a rational government in Washington, we would be conditioning aid to Israel on cessation of building settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. If you were a Christian or an Arab whose family had lived in the region for years, wouldn’t you be resentful if an occupying power (Israel) destroyed your olive orchard or neighborhood to re-settle zealots on it? Israel embarrassed visiting Vice President Joe Biden in 2010 by announcing increased settlements in East Jerusalem. The Obama Administration, Senator Feinstein and others rightfully condemned the action, yet now President Obama and Congress are ignoring the insult and oddly rewarding Israel for its actions that are de-stabilizing the Middle East. Even worse, they are acting in the name of the American people. Many members of Congress are puppets of AIPAC, including many members who claim to be “doves” and preach “peace, peace, peace” in their districts, yet kowtow to the Israel warmonging lobby in Washington and overseas. The East Bay’s Congressman John Garamendi is among the 20% of House members who skirted ethical rules to take an expenses-paid junket to Israel at AIPAC’s behest last summer, detailed here

Members of Congress like Mr. Garamendi care more about narrow foreign special interests that entangle our country in overseas controversies than the economic plight of average Americans. As for Senator Barbara Boxer being among Israel’s foremost agents in Congress, that is a disturbing new development and should make people in the Bay Area “Peace Community” question her motives — this might be quid pro quo for some promise or $$$ given during her 2010 election.
