CA15: Corbett says Swalwell mail is ‘based on lies’

State Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett is seeing red over a new campaign mailer from Rep. Eric Swalwell that takes liberties with her legislative attendance record.

The mailer Swalwell, D-Dublin, sent to 15th Congressional District voters doubles down on claims, previously made in a mailer and television ad two weeks ago, that Corbett, D-Hayward, missed 949 votes in the Legislature; pocketed $32,000 in per diem expenses for days she didn’t show up; and accepted her $95,000 annual salary in the Senate.

Swalwell’s campaign provided an opposition research memo it says backs up the claims – but that memo notes Corbett has a 97 percent attendance record in the Senate and a 98 percent attendance rate in the Assembly. Remember, she has served in the Legislature for 14 years.

Also, most of the absences for which she allegedly claimed per diem pay was for “legislative business” on days in which there were no votes taken.

And above all that, “there are serious discrepancies in this opposition research, there are days I did not take per diem and they say that I did,” Corbett said Wednesday. “This is all very tightly controlled – you must be present to receive per diem or you must be on legislative business, and records are kept.”

Even were all those absences accurate, a 97- to 98-percent attendance rate is nothing to sneeze at, she said. “Their own research tells you that I have an excellent attendance record, that I do work hard. … They are making false allegations, there are blatant lies.”

Corbett said Swalwell “will say anything to get elected, and that’s the worst kind of politician; his own research proves that this campaign mailing is based on lies.” She accused him of adhering to the age-old campaign strategy that “if you don’t have your own strong record to talk about, then you say false things about your opponent. I’ve seen it time and time again, it’s very disappointing.”

We can go back and forth on the negative mailers, but research shows that negative campaigning is not particularly effective in swaying voters one way or the other. Some studies show they depress the turnout of independents, but that’s actually likely to harm Swalwell rather than Corbett in this case (it could help Honda against Khanna, however).

This is another example of Swalwell’s well-known integrity deficit, which I spoke of in a letter to the editor published Wed, 5/21. He’s stated repeatedly in small meetings and public forums that he’s a progressive, but his right-wing doners like AmeriPAC and Calpine, the perpetrator of the new air pollution violator-power plant in Hayward, plus his voting record, say otherwise. Nonpartisan group GovTrack.org’s analysis of his entire voting record places him far to the right of the other representatives from the Bay Area, clustered with the Blue Dog Democrats and Republicans.Go to http://tinyurl.com/rep-swalwell for more truths about his lies. If anybody checks his record and still thinks Swalwell is a progressive, I’ve got a bridge I’d like to sell them.

  • @disqus_8mhouawbtP:disqus, let’s set the record straight — “AmeriPAC: The Fund for a Greater America” that donated to Congressman Swalwell is the leadership political action committee of Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, Democrat of Maryland (see, e.g., http://www.linkedin.com/company/ameripac—steny-hoyer). Last I checked, House Democrats didn’t elect one of those “right-wing doners” to lead our party in the House likely believes they own the bridge they purport is for sale.

It’s just laughable Corbett would attack Congressman Eric Swalwell on the integrity-ethics front, the California State Senate – under Corbett’s leadership (she has the number 2 job) – has become cesspool of corruption. You have three members either convicted or under under indictment. We’ve seen weekly FBI raids, members consorting with known gangsters, members being indicted for money laundering, gun running, vote selling – the list goes on and on. The criminal indictments filed on Yee and Caledron are as thick as phone books.
Ethics in the California State Senate has gotten so bad Pro Tem Steinberg – in a desperate PR move – ordered all members, including Ellen Corbett, to take “refresher classes” on ethics. In the mornings members have to take “Bribery 101” before heading off to do their work! Boy, is that a sorry state of affairs. Apparently – after taking her how-to-spot- a- bribe classes in the morning, Corbett meets with her campaign consultants and they plan these ethics attacks on Swalwell, a respected former prosecutor.
Really – insofar as Corbett’s campaign for Congress is concerned, the right slogan could be “Ellen Corbett for Congress; A Voice from the Sewer”. I’m sorry, that’s what the State Senate has become under Corbett’s leadership, a sewer. No way will voters replace this fine young Congressman Eric Swalwell with anybody from Sacramento, you can bet the farm on that.

Frank, your remarks are so ridiculous it motivated me to dust off my copy of Orwells “1984”. Geez, what a lot of baloney you’ve written here!

Let’s see now, this is the same Corbett who accused Swalwell in a mailer of supporting the Paul Ryan budget. What’s the old saying about people living in glass houses?

Please let next Tuesday arrive and be over. All this is getting to be a bit much even for us junkies. I would need a file cabinet to hold all the mailers from Swalwell and Corbett and from Glazer, Sbranti and Baker. None of us has anything new to say on the subject. I’m just curious to see what effect the expected record low turnout will have and how things will be skewed by which registered voters bother to vote.

I voted about two weeks ago.

    To hell with them all!

  • Thank you, @SLtalk:disqus! @disqus_8mhouawbtP:disqus, as you can see, AmeriPAC: The Fund for a Greater America includes as top donors noted “right-wing doners” like liberal Congressman Eliot Engel; the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; and the National Education Association.

Swalwell’s own opposition research shows Senator Corbett’s excellent attendance record in both the State Senate and Assembly. Over 14 years of dedicated service to our district. Yet Swalwell ignores these facts and spews blatant lies! This proves once again that he will say and do anything to get elected. Eric Swalwell is a DINO in the worst way. Ellen Corbett is a true progressive and Democrat. I know that she shares my values and will work hard to represent us in Washington DC.
