Is this what we have come down to?

Today’s story in the CCT by my colleague Paul Thissen outlines how Orinda plans to take charitable contributions from residents in an effort to pay for stuff the city can’t afford, you know, frivolous things like fixing its bad roads and inadequate storm drains.

I can see the advertisement now: “Sponsor your own pothole!” “Donate and we’ll put your name on a storm drain cover!”

Unbelievable.

I would hate to see this trend gain speed.

Charities that help causes such as battered women, blind children, injured wildlife and orphans are already suffering in the poor economy. The last thing they need is more competition.

Cracker poll is crummy

Here’s my award for Dopey Press Release of the Day: The Ritz cracker company says a national survey shows Americans want as president someone who is “strong, capable and fun.”

Fun? I don’t know about you but I don’t care if my president is fun. I want him or her to take the job pretty darned serious. Voters don’t want their politicians to have a good time.

But if you must know, the poll results showed that former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani is the most fun Republican while Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is the most fun Democrat.

Now, this is funny: 42 percent of Republicans said they have a lot fun each day, compared to 35 percent of Democrats.
